Prior to Pascagoula, Collins served as an assistant coach at Clarksdale High in Clarksdale, Mississippi where, in two years, he helped achieve a 24-3 record and a state championship title. Collins also gained his expertise while earning his undergraduate degree at Northeast Mississippi Community College and later Delta State University where he learned the game as a student assistant coach. Collins was graduated from Delta State University in 2001 with a degree in Physical Education.

Collins is a native of Clinton, Mississippi. He and his wife, Pamela, have two children, Spencer and Sloan.
