Joel Williams

Joel Williams, a 1981 graduate of Mississippi College (MC), is set to return to his alma mater for the first time in his extensive coaching career. Joining the Choctaws as Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, and Offensive Line Coach, Williams brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the program.

"I am thrilled to be back at MC where I played a part in the first Gulf South Conference Championship team in 1979," Williams expressed his excitement. "Coach Kershaw and I reunite here, and I'm eager to contribute to the turnaround of this program."

Williams, a former long snapper for the 1979 Choctaw team that clinched the GSC title with a 10-3 record and reached the Division II semifinals, transitioned into coaching after his playing career. He has had a successful tenure coaching at various high schools across the Deep South before making his mark in college football.

With previous coaching roles at Ole Miss and other institutions, Williams brings a diverse coaching background to Mississippi College. Notably, during his time as Offensive Coordinator at Fairhope High School, his teams saw significant success, averaging over 30 points and 350 yards per game, leading to multiple playoff appearances.

His coaching journey includes notable stints at Foley High School, where he mentored future NFL star Julio Jones from 2005 to 2006, and Birmingham Southern College from 2006 to 2008, where he played a pivotal role in reestablishing the football program. At Delta State University from 2002 to 2005, Williams orchestrated high-flying offenses, leading the Gulf South Conference in passing and setting numerous school records, including averages of over 500 yards per game and 40-plus points.

Beyond his coaching accolades, Williams has a proven track record of revitalizing programs, evident from his time at UMS-Wright Preparatory School from 1994 to 1996, and other high schools where he turned struggling teams into contenders.

Throughout his career, Williams has remained dedicated to coaching, from his beginnings as a high school assistant to his current position at Mississippi College. His return to MC signifies a homecoming for Williams, who looks forward to contributing to the program's success once again.

Williams is married to his wife, Martha, and the couple have one son, Garrison.
