Recruitable Prospective Student Athlete:

-  A prospective student athlete is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade.

-  A contactable prospect:  An in person, off campus recruiting contact shall not be made with a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardian(s) until the prospect has completed their junior year in high school.

- Four Year College Prospects:  A athletic staff member or any other representative of the institution’s athletics interests shall not make contact in any manner with the student athlete of another four-year college institution, directly or indirectly without first obtaining written permission to do so, regardless of who makes the initial contact

(Exception:  A member institution may contact a student-athlete who has withdrawn officially from a four-year collegiate institution)



Recruiting:

-  Unofficial Visits:  A prospect may visit a member institution’s campus at his or her own expense an unlimited number of times.  A prospect may make unofficial visits before his or her senior year in high school.

-  Tryouts:  A member institution, on its campus or elsewhere, shall NOT conduct (or have conducted on its behalf) any physical activity (e.g., practice session or test/tryout) at which one or more prospects reveal, demonstrate or display their athletics abilities in any sport.

-  Letter of Intent:  An institution shall not utilize any form of a letter of intent or similar form of commitment in the recruitment of a prospect.  However, it shall be permissible for the institution to utilize in the recruitment of a prospect its pre-enrollment forms executed by prospective students in general at the institution. 



Eligibility:

-  General:  To be eligible to represent Mississippi College in intercollegiate athletics competition, a student-athlete will be enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours and maintain a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average.

(Exception:  a student athlete in their final semester prior to graduation may take less than the 12 hours only if those hours are required to complete their undergraduate degree)

-  Ten Semester / Fifteen Quarter Rule:   A student-athlete shall complete his/her four seasons of participation during the first 10 semesters or 15 quarters in which the student-athlete is enrolled in a full time college program.  (12 hours counts as full time)
            
            NOTE:  A student-athlete is considered to have used a semester or quarter under this rule when the student attends any class while officially registered, even if the student-athlete drops to part-time status at any time during the term, including his/her first day of attendance.

            ADDITIONAL NOTE:  A student-athlete is considered to have used a season of eligibility when he/she practices with the team after the team’s first contest.

-  TransfersFor a transfer student to be immediately eligible, the following must apply:

            If the student-athlete transfers from a four year college and would have been academically and athletically eligible had he/she remained at that institution.

            A student-athlete that has NOT previously practiced or competed at another institution.  This provision does not apply to those receiving hardship waivers.

            A student-athlete transfers from a four-year college to a two-year college and then to Mississippi College, the student-athlete is eligible provided the student either would have been academically AND athletically eligible had he/she remained at the four-year college OR he/she has successfully completed at least 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of transferable degree credit and spent at least two semesters or three quarters of attendance at the two-year college.

Playing & Practice Seasons

-  Required Days Off:  During the playing season, all athletically related activities shall be prohibited during one calendar day per week, except during participation in NCAA championships

-  Athletically related activities:  Examples include, practice, field/floor/on court activity, setting up offensive / defensive alignment, chalk talks, lecture or discussion of strategy related to the sport, activities using equipment related to the sport, viewing game films, competition, required weight training and conditioning activities held at the direction of or supervised by an institutional staff member.

-  Non-traditional season workouts:  All athletically related activities outside of the approved number of weeks shall be considered “voluntary” by the student-athlete.

-  Voluntary Athletically Related Activities:  in order for any athletically related activity to be considered “voluntary”, all of the following must be met
            
            The student-athlete must not be required to report back to a coach or other athletics department staff member any information related to the activity.  In addition, no athletics department staff member who observes the activity may report back to the student-athlete’s coach any information related to the activity.

            The activity must be initiated solely by the student-athlete.  Neither the institution nor any athletics department staff member may require the student-athlete to participate in the activity at any time.

            The student-athlete’s attendance and participation in the activity (or lack thereof) may not be recorded for the purposes of reporting such information to coaching staff members or other student-athlete.

            The student-athlete may not be subjected to penalty if he/she elects not to participate in the activity.  In addition, neither the institution nor any athletics department staff member may provide recognition or incentives (awards) to a student-athlete based on his/her attendance or performance in the activity.
