CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi Christian University freshman Jake McMillan added another prestigious honor to his remarkable debut season, earning U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year recognition.
McMillan becomes one of the most decorated freshmen in program history after a season that saw him rewrite both the school and Gulf South Conference record books in the decathlon.
The Madison, Mississippi, native captured the Gulf South Conference decathlon championship in April, totaling a program- and conference-record 6,974 points. His performance helped earn him Gulf South Conference Field Athlete of the Year honors and secured his spot at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Entering the national meet as the No. 14 seed and the fifth-ranked freshman in Division II, McMillan concluded his season with Second Team All-America honors after placing 12th in the decathlon in Emporia, Kansas. He scored 6,775 points across two days of competition while producing standout performances in several events, including a runner-up finish in the high jump at 1.96 meters and the 110-meter hurdles in 14.66 seconds. He also placed sixth in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.50 meters.
McMillan posted strong marks throughout the competition in the long jump, shot put, discus, javelin, 400 meters and 1,500 meters to cap a season filled with accomplishments.
The USTFCCCA South Region Athlete of the Year award recognizes the top performer in the region based on accomplishments throughout the outdoor season. McMillan's conference title, record-setting decathlon performance and All-America finish made him a clear choice for the honor.
His award continues a historic year for Mississippi Christian track and field, which saw multiple athletes qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships and earn All-America recognition on the national stage.
