Bailey Becomes All-Time Strikeout Leader, Choctaws Defeat Tigers

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — Mississippi College closed out the regular season Saturday with a 2-0 victory over West Alabama in the finale of a three-game Gulf South Conference series at University Field.

Behind a dominant performance from senior pitcher Camryn Bailey and a timely swing from Blakely Gill, the Choctaws finished the regular season 29-21-1 overall and 19-14 in GSC play.

Bailey (15-9) was outstanding in the circle, tossing a complete-game one-hitter. She allowed just one hit, one walk, and struck out six batters in the shutout effort.

The senior also made program history in the win. Her sixth strikeout of the game — the 571st of her career — made her Mississippi College's all-time career strikeouts leader, surpassing Katie Waterbury's previous record of 567.

The game remained scoreless through three innings before the Choctaws broke through in the fourth. Gill delivered the biggest swing of the day, blasting a two-run home run to left field to score Shelby Samples and give Mississippi College a 2-0 lead.

That proved to be all the offense the Choctaws needed, as Bailey retired 14 of the final 15 batters she faced and did not allow a runner past first base late in the game.

Mississippi College recorded three hits in the contest, with Samples, Gill, and Morgan Lavergne each tallying one. Gill drove in both runs.

West Alabama's Eleanor De Block (22-9) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits over seven innings.

Mississippi College's next game will be against Montevallo in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Wednesday, May 6, at 3:30 p.m. in Oxford, Alabama.
