Choctaws Fall Just Short in GSC Championship Thriller

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Mississippi College saw its historic run come to a narrow end on Saturday, falling 4-3 to West Florida Argonauts in the Gulf South Conference Championship at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center.

The loss marks the first of the season for the Choctaws, who now sit at 23-1 overall and will await their postseason fate in the NCAA Division II Selection Show on May 4.

Mississippi College opened the match with momentum, securing the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. The Choctaws showed composure and chemistry across the doubles courts, setting the tone in a championship environment against one of the nation's top teams.

West Florida responded quickly in singles play, claiming three straight victories to flip the match and take a 3-1 advantage.

Facing elimination, Mississippi College battled back.

Rocio Martinez delivered a crucial win at No. 2 singles, keeping the Choctaws within striking distance. Moments later, Katharina Weber followed with a victory at No. 3 singles to even the match at 3-3.

With the championship on the line, all eyes turned to court four.

Anna Hudson fought through a tightly contested match, pushing it to a decisive third set. In a back-and-forth battle, Hudson came up just short, as West Florida secured the final point to clinch the 4-3 victory and the GSC Tournament title.

Despite the result, Mississippi College's performance reinforced its standing as one of the top teams in the South Region.

MC will find out their placement during the NCAA Division II Selection Show on May 4. A top-two regional seed would allow MC to host first- and second-round matches, while a No. 3 seed or lower would likely send the Choctaws on the road for the opening rounds.

Now, Mississippi College turns its attention to the national stage, awaiting its opportunity to continue a remarkable 2026 campaign.
