Iglesias Matches Record 66, Choctaws One Shot Off Lead at GSC Championship

DICKSON, Tenn. — Joao Iglesias delivered a historic opening round to lead Mississippi College men's golf into contention Monday, Apr. 20 at the 2026 Gulf South Conference Men's Golf Championship, firing a 6-under 66 to tie the lowest first-round score in tournament history.

Iglesias' record-tying performance - last matched by West Florida's Chandler Blanchet in 2017 - makes him just the fourth player in GSC Championship history to open with a 66. His round vaulted him atop the individual leader board and powered the Choctaws to a team score of 3-under 285, placing them second after 18 holes at Greystone Golf Club.

MC trails first-round leader West Florida (284, -4) by a single stroke in a tightly packed field, with Lee (287, -1) and Valdosta State (290, +2) also within striking distance as the championship continues. Iglesias set the tone early and maintained control throughout the day, carding one of the cleanest rounds of the tournament to give the Choctaws a legitimate shot at the conference title. Behind him, the Choctaws received key contributions across the lineup.

Jack McKie turned in a steady 1-over 73, finishing in a tie for 13th and providing a strong complementary round to keep MC near the top of the standings. Ben Eichelberger added a 4-over 76, landing in a tie for 25th, while Zach Robertson posted a 5-over 77 to tie for 28th and round out the team's counting scores. Todd McKie delivered one of the more eye-catching rounds of the day, carding a 2-under 70 to sit in a tie for 43rd individually, giving the Choctaws additional depth heading into the second round. Linus Doverfors did not record a score in the opening round.

With 36 holes remaining, the GSC Championship remains wide open, but behind a record-tying performance from Iglesias, Mississippi College has already made a powerful statement.
