CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College used a late-inning rally in Game 1 and a dominant all-around effort in Game 2 to secure a doubleheader sweep of Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday at the MC Softball Complex, winning 5-3 and 6-0.
With the wins, the Choctaws (17-10-1) completed a season sweep of Arkansas-Monticello, adding Tuesday's victories to a pair of wins (5-3, 7-3) earlier this season in Monticello.
Mississippi College erased an early deficit in the opener before pulling away late. Arkansas-Monticello (9-19) struck first with two runs in the opening inning and added another in the second to take a 3-1 lead.
The Choctaws responded in the third, as Madelyn England delivered a two-run single to tie the game at 3-3, scoring Shelby Samples and Morgan Lavergne. Mississippi College then took control in the fourth inning. Blakely Gill sparked the rally with an RBI double to plate Ashlyn Rodgers, and Lavergne later scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 5-3.
Grace Wallis (2-2) earned the win in the circle, allowing three runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings. Camryn Bailey closed the door, striking out four over the final 1.2 innings to record her first save of the season.
Offensively, Lavergne led the way with two hits and two runs scored, while England drove in a pair.
In the nightcap, Mississippi College wasted little time taking control.
After England doubled home Megan Matheis in the second inning, the Choctaws broke the game open with a five-run third. Matheis and Sarah Lee each delivered RBI singles before England capped the inning with a three-run home run to push the lead to 6-0.
England finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs, while Lavergne added three hits and Matheis scored twice.
AK Willingham (2-1) was dominant in Game 2, tossing a complete-game shutout. She allowed just four hits and one walk while keeping Arkansas-Monticello off the scoreboard throughout.
Mississippi College will look to carry the momentum into its next Gulf South Conference series on the road against Trevecca Nazarene, with a doubleheader scheduled for Friday beginning at 2 p.m. CT, followed by a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
