Choctaws Drop 2-1 Battle to West Florida at Longabaugh Field

CLINTON, Miss. — West Florida emerged victorious over Mississippi College with a 2-1 win on Sunday at Robert P. Longabaugh Field. The Choctaws took an early lead with a goal in the first half, but West Florida responded with two second-half goals to secure the win. MC's defense recorded four saves, but West Florida's steady offensive pressure, resulting in 12 shots, proved decisive.

The first half unfolded with a strategic breakthrough for the home side as Vail Wartes found the back of the net in the 32nd minute, assisted by Charlie Cooper, giving Mississippi College a 1-0 lead. Wartes scored one goal on her only shot, contributing significantly to the team's attack. Celine Grothe played a crucial role in maintaining this advantage, making key saves against West Florida's shots, including a bottom-center attempt from Nicola Salawa in the 29th minute. Despite multiple attempts and corner opportunities for West Florida, The Blue and Gold's defense held firm, closing the half with a narrow lead. Charlie Cooper's assist was instrumental in setting up the scoring opportunity for Wartes.

The second half began with MC trying to maintain their lead, but West Florida equalized in the 49th minute with a goal from Olof Thorvaldsdottir. Despite a strong save by Grothe off a shot from Megan Gettys at 56:40, West Florida pulled ahead with Alexis Castle's goal in the 59th minute. The Choctaws faced defensive pressure throughout, as evidenced by several yellow cards and fouls, while West Florida capitalized on their opportunities to secure a 2-1 victory. Erin Stamatopoulos registered one shot, continuing to pressure the opposing defense in the second half.
