CLEVELAND, Miss. — Mississippi College dominated Delta State University in a 4-0 victory on Sunday at Delta Field in a non-conference contest. The Choctaws scored once in the first half and added three goals in the second half, maintaining control throughout the match. Their defense recorded a shutout, allowing only three shots on goal. Both teams will play again on Oct. 3 in Clinton for a GSC matchup.
The first half between Mississippi College and Delta State saw early defensive plays with the Statesmen earning two corner kicks in the first five minutes.
Callum Lee attempted an early shot in the 9th minute which went wide, while goalkeeper
Cole Turner made crucial saves against shots from Alfie Lally and Landon Cox. Mississippi College faced multiple offside calls but managed to break through in the 44th minute when
Gage Sorey scored with an assist from Lee, giving the Choctaws a 1-0 lead at the end of the half. Despite the fouls and a yellow card issued to
Pierson Moyer, the Choctaws capitalized on their opportunities to take the lead going into the break.
Mississippi College opened the second half strong, with
Russell Berko scoring in the 49th minute, assisted by
Lewis Matton, increasing their lead to 2-0. The Choctaws continued to press, with Matton extending the lead to 3-0 in the 57th minute off an assist from
Benjamin Ellis. Despite attempts by the Statesmen, including a shot saved by Turner in the 74th minute, the Choctaws maintained their pressure. The visiting team sealed the match with a final goal from
Sergio Garrido in the 87th minute, assisted by Berko, securing a decisive 4-0 victory.
The first half saw Mississippi College assert control with a pivotal breakthrough in the 44th minute, as Sorey scored the lone goal assisted by Lee, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Turner was instrumental in maintaining this advantage, making crucial saves at the 12th and 24th minutes to deny the Statesmen opportunities. Despite multiple offsides and fouls, the Choctaws capitalized on their late corner kick to break the deadlock just before the break.
The second half began with the Choctaws extending their lead when Berko scored in the 50th minute, assisted by Matton. Matton continued to make an impact, finding the net himself in the 57th minute with an assist from Ellis, widening the gap to 3-0. The Choctaws maintained their offensive pressure, and in the 88th minute, Garrido sealed the victory with a goal assisted by Berko, resulting in a decisive 4-0 win over the Statesmen.
Russell Berko contributed significantly with one goal and one assist, also leading the team with four shots. Matton matched Berko's impact by scoring a goal and recording an assist, with three of his four shots being on target.
Gage Sorey made a decisive impact by scoring the game-winning goal, converting his only shot on goal. Garrido also found the back of the net, adding a goal from one of his four attempts.
