CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College softball kicked off its final home series of the regular season with a commanding 10-2 victory over Delta State in six innings Friday afternoon at the MC Softball Complex.
The Lady Choctaws (32-15, 21-8 GSC) poured on 14 hits and used a five-run third inning to pull away from the Lady Statesmen (12-33, 4-25 GSC), securing the win via run-rule. Madison Jenkins improved to 13-4 on the season with a complete-game effort, allowing five hits and just one earned run.
Delta State struck first in the top of the first, capitalizing on an MC error to bring home a run. Mississippi College quickly responded in the third with an offensive explosion. Megan Matheis tied the game with an RBI single before Ashley Lightcap and Bella Myers added RBIs of their own. Shelby Samples capped the inning with a two-run double to center, putting MC ahead 5-1.
Samples continued her big day at the plate with an RBI single in the fifth, and the Lady Choctaws closed the door with a four-run sixth. Jenkins helped her own cause with an RBI single before Brookelyn Cannon delivered the knockout punch — a three-run single to right center that ended the game early.
Cannon led MC with three hits and three RBIs, while Samples added three RBIs on two hits. Lightcap scored twice and tallied two hits, and Jenkins also chipped in a pair of hits from the circle.
Delta State returns to action on Saturday for a doubleheader in Clinton to close the series. Senior Day festivities are scheduled to begin at 12:40 p.m., with first pitch of game two set for 1:00 p.m.
