MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Mississippi College women's tennis team advanced to the Gulf South Conference Championship match with a 4-0 sweep of Montevallo on Friday morning at Lagoon Park, while the MC men fell 4-0 to undefeated No. 2-ranked Valdosta State in the afternoon semifinal.
The No. 18 Lady Choctaws (19-6), seeded second in the tournament, took control early in doubles and never looked back. Ana Julissa De Mata Rodríguez and Emma Roberts secured a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Ann Cabot Stockett and Katharina Weber followed with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 to claim the opening point.
MC continued its dominance in singles. Roberts, ranked No. 18 nationally, led the charge with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the top line, followed by De Mata Rodríguez's 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3. Weber sealed the match with a gritty comeback, defeating Montevallo's Johanna Kullman 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
The Lady Choctaws will face No. 1 seed West Alabama in the GSC Championship match on Saturday.
In the men's semifinal, No. 26 Mississippi College (16-10) was unable to overcome powerhouse Valdosta State (19-0). The Blazers clinched the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 lines before sweeping the first three singles matches in straight sets.
MC's Alex Blanchard, ranked No. 4 nationally, dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to No. 2-ranked Takeshi Taco at No. 1 singles. Florian Walcher and Gustavo Tedesco also fell in straight sets, as VSU quickly locked up the victory.
The semifinal loss ends the Choctaws' run in the conference tournament, but MC will now await its NCAA Tournament fate with regional bids set to be announced next week.
