CLEVELAND, Miss. — Mississippi College men's and women's tennis programs delivered dominant performances on the road Thursday, sweeping Delta State in a pair of Gulf South Conference matches at the Cleveland Country Club.
The Choctaw men improved to 13-7 on the season with a 7-0 shutout over the Statesmen (2-14), while the No. 22-ranked Lady Choctaws surged to 16-4 overall with a 6-1 victory over the Lady Statesmen (1-14).
In men's action, Mississippi College took the doubles point after convincing wins on courts two and three. Florian Walcher and Walker Ellis cruised to a 6-1 victory at No. 2, followed by a 6-1 win from Sergio Ramirez Ocana and Alvaro Saint Martin at No. 3.
The Choctaws didn't drop a single singles match, with standout wins including a straight-sets victory from Alex Benichou Blanchard at No. 1 (6-1, 6-1), and comeback three-set wins from Rafael Sabio at No. 2 and Gustavo Tedesco at No. 4. Walker Ellis closed out the sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6.
On the women's side, Mississippi College set the tone with dominant doubles wins. Emma Roberts and Ana Julissa De Mata Rodríguez claimed a 6-3 win at No. 1, while Ann Cabot Stockett and Katharina Weber rolled to a 6-1 victory at No. 3.
The Lady Choctaws claimed five of six singles matches, led by Elena Roberts' commanding 6-2, 6-2 win at the top line. Rocio Martinez and De Mata Rodríguez both battled through three sets at lines two and three, respectively, with Martinez claiming a comeback win and De Mata Rodríguez dropping a tight decision in the only point lost on the day.
Mississippi College returns to action Saturday, April 12, for Senior Day at the MC Tennis Complex in Clinton. The Choctaws host Lee University, with first serve scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
