CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College softball capped off a series sweep over Trevecca Nazarene with a 4-3 win on Saturday, March 22, at the MC Softball Complex. The victory marked the Lady Choctaws' fourth consecutive Gulf South Conference series sweep.
Brookelyn Cannon (3-2) earned the win after pitching a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out four. Despite a brief rally from the Trojans in the fifth inning, Cannon's performance was key in securing the Lady Choctaws' victory.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second inning, when Mississippi College broke through with two runs. Cannon singled to bring in Ashley Lightcap and Bella Myers for a 2-0 lead.
Trevecca Nazarene answered in the top of the fifth with three runs. Peyton Herrin singled to score Rachel Locke and Chloe Williams, and Anna Sensing doubled to center field, bringing in Courtney Jarrett to give the Trojans a 3-2 advantage.
However, the Lady Choctaws quickly responded in the bottom of the sixth. Lightcap doubled to left center to score Myers and tie the game at 3-3. Cannon then singled to bring Lightcap home, putting Mississippi College ahead 4-3.
Trevecca Nazarene could not mount a comeback in the seventh inning, and Mississippi College held on for the win.
Mississippi College finished the game with nine hits. Lightcap led the offense with two doubles, and Cannon had two hits and two RBIs. Trevecca's Herrin and Sensing each had two hits in the loss, but the Trojans were unable to push across more runs.
With the series sweep, Mississippi College improves to 24-8 on the season. The Lady Choctaws will return to action next weekend with a road trip to Valdosta State, where they will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 29, at 1 p.m. CT, followed by a game on Sunday, March 30, at 11 a.m. CT.
