Choctaw Tennis Splits Weekend Contests

Clinton, Miss. —- The Mississippi College Tennis teams are returning to Clinton after collecting wins over Montevallo and losing to Auburn Montgomery over the weekend.

The weekend started on Saturday, March 23 at Montevallo, with the men winning 5-2 and the women winning 6-1. 

The Lady Choctaws (8-6, 2-1 GSC) opened their action by sweeping doubles play.  Elyangelica Alas and Fernanda Cota opened doubles play with a 6-4 win, Emma Roberts and Maria Rodriguez followed that with a 6-2 win, and Gabrielle Geolier Ana Julissa De Mata Rodriguez completed the sweep with a 6-1 win.   

The Lady Choctaws' success continued in singles play with Elyangelica Alas, Ana Julissa De Mata Rodriguez, Emma Roberts, Gabrielle Geolier, and Anna Hudson all collecting wins to deliver the 6-1 win over Montevallo (6-4, 4-4 GSC). 

The men only came away with one win in doubles play, with Alex Benichou Blanchard and Rafael Sabio securing a 6-3 victory. 

The majority of the Choctaws' success came in singles play, where they won five out of six contests.  Alex Benichou Blanchard, Alvaro Saint Martin, Surgio Ocana Ramirez, Rafael Sabio, and Joe Jarvis all collected wins and delivered the Choctaws (8-6, 2-1 GSC) a 5-2 win over Montevallo (6-7, 3-3 GSC) on the day. 

The men were unable to keep their success going on Sunday, March 24 at AUM (7-6, 2-0 GSC), losing 5-2.

The setbacks began in doubles play, where the Choctaws were only able to pick up one win, with Felipe Iser and Walker Ellis losing 6-3,  Alex Benichou Blanchard and Rafael Sabio losing 7-5, and Alvaro Saint Martin and Joe Jarvis picking up the lone win 6-2.

The Choctaws were unable to bounce back in singles play, only picking up two wins.  Alex Benichou Blanchard picked up a win by opponent retirement in single #1 and Sergio Ramirez Ocana picked up a win in single #5 while Rafael Sabio, Alvaro Saint Martin, Joe Jarvis, and Antione Nivault all suffered losses.

The Lady Choctaws suffered a loss of their own against the Lady Warhawks (10-4, 3-1 GSC).

Gabrielle Geolier and Anna Hudson were the only Lady Choctaws to secure a win in doubles play, 6-0.  Elyangelica Alas and Fernanda Cota suffered a 7-6 setback while Emma Roberts and Maria Rodriguez fell 6-2.  

Anna Hudson was also the only Lady Choctaw to find success in singles play, winning the #5 and #6 singles.  Elyangelica Alas, Emma Roberts, Fernanda Cota, and Gabrielle Geolier all suffered losses on the day as AUM secured the 5-2 victory.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday, April 2 in Clinton, Mississippi against Delta State with play beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
