ATLANTA, Ga. - The Mississippi College Track and Field team competed in the first day of the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday, and the Choctaws had an impressive showing, breaking multiple school records in the process.
One of the highlights of the day was Essence Tornabene's performance in the Women's Hammer throw. Tornabene threw the Hammer a distance of 53.18 meters, snagging School Record No. 15 for the Choctaws. Moreover, this was the seventh school record for the Women's throws just this season. Tornabene's outstanding performance left her team and coaches thrilled, setting the tone for the rest of the meet.
In addition, Kelechi Christian's success in the Women's 100-meter dash was another great moment for the Choctaws. Christian won heat two of the event and lowered her school record to 11.60 seconds, achieving the NCAA Division II provisional standard. Christian's effort was an impressive display of speed and determination, inspiring her teammates and coaches.
Furthermore, Bre Bell made waves with her outstanding performance in the Women's 3K Steeplechase. Bell shattered her own school record, running a GSC-leading mark of 11:08.8! Bell's fantastic run was a testament to her hard work and dedication, and she left the competition with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Other notable performances include Kevin Turner, who won section two of the Men's 100-meter dash in a lifetime best and NCAA Division II provisional standard mark of 10.42 seconds, and moves to No. 3 all-time in Mississippi College Track and Field history in the event. Shemar Patten and Alana Green also added section wins in the 100-meter dashes. Additionally, Ava Dickerson added a lifetime best in the Women's 3,000-meter Steeplechase, and remains No. 2 all-time in Mississippi College Track and Field history in the event.
Overall, Mississippi College Track and Field had a strong showing at the Georgia Tech Invitational, breaking multiple school records and inspiring their teammates and coaches. The Choctaws will be looking to build on this success in the upcoming events and hope to continue to make their mark.
