CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College had a stellar opening weekend at the 2023 Mardi Gras Classic in Youngsville, La. capping off the weekend with a 4-2 win over Drury on Sunday.
The Lady Choctaws went 4-1 on the weekend to begin the 2023 slate with wins on Friday night over Harding (4-3, 11 innings), #6 Texas A&M Kingsville (10-0), Southeastern Oklahoma State (8-0), and Sunday's win over Drury (4-0).
"This weekend was a great weekend for our team." said head coach
Brooke O'Hair, "We faced a lot of talented teams which allowed us to see areas that we need to improve on. Overall, the coaches were really impressed at how well we played as a team and how well we executed both offensively and defensively. We are looking forward to the Charger Chillout!"
On Sunday, MC trailed by one run in the second inning, yet with one run in bottom of the second inning and one run in the bottom of the third, the Lady Choctaws would grab the 2-1 lead over Drury.
With runs in the third inning and sixth inning, on a double by
Jordan LaFosse, that scored
Hannah Tauzin, and a single by
McCall Lee that scored
Alexis Laughlin, MC grabbed some insurance runs, going on to win over Drury by a final of 4-2.
With the win on Sunday, the Lady Choctaws ended the weekend with a 4-1 overall record against top competition from all over the region.
MC hit .286 for the weekend as a team, including being led by
Jordan LaFosse with a .375 batting average with six hits in 16 at bats. The Lady Choctaws shortstop also collected three doubles in five games.
Alexis Laughlin finished 7-of-7 in stolen bases, including five hits in 15 at bats for a .333 batting average for the weekend at the plate. She also tallied five runs scored and drove in four runs.
In the circle, freshman
Camryn Bailey went a perfect 4-0, throwing 23.2 innings on the weekend. She also had one complete game and had two shutout appearances. Opponents only hit .160 off of her for the weekend, giving up 13 hits in 81 batters faced, three runs, one earned run, and an ERA of 0.30.
MC returns to action for the Charger Chillout on Friday with a double-header versus Carson-Newman (12 p.m.) and #20 Lincoln Memorial (5 p.m.) The Lady Choctaws once again will participate in a five game weekend series in Huntsville, Ala. hosted by UAH.
