Montgomery, Al. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team defeated the Warhawks of Auburn-Montgomery 1-0 Sunday afternoon (October 29th).
In the final match of the regular season, the 13th ranked Choctaws have already clinched the top seed in the GSC Tournament, but massively boosted their resume with the victory over AUM who were ranked 15 in the country entering the match.
In the first half, hardly any offense was produced for either squad as there was only seven total shots in the first 45 minutes.
Cole Turner in net for the Choctaws made two crucial saves in the first half, and had three total on the afternoon. The score remained at zero entering the break, but would not stay that way for long. Just a singular minute after the second half began, MC took one of their seven total corner kicks they had on the afternoon.
Yamato Fujishima delivered a well-placed curling ball where
Benedikt Strauchmann cut off the pass' angle and headed it in goal for the Choctaws to take the lead.
It was the graduate student's third goal of the season, and arguably the biggest. The Choctaws would not need to score again as the defense held strong for the rest of the match, only giving AUM five shots in the second half and posting a shutout victory for the sixth time this season. While nearly even, the Choctaws had the upper had on shots by a 9-8 margin and a 4-3 favor on shots on target. Each team's keeper made three saves each on the match, and for Turner, it was his fourth clean sheet of the season and eighth of his career.
The Choctaws (12-1-3, 8-0-3 GSC) move on to the GSC Tournament as the top seed where they will play host to the eighth-seeded Delta State for the quarterfinals on Sunday, November 5th at Robert P. Longabaugh Field with the time still to be announced.
