VICKSBURG, Miss.--- The Mississippi College men's soccer team opened up the year with a 1-0 win over Florida Southern on Friday (August 26th).
Felix Ewald scored in the 34th minute off an assist from Soane Folituu to give the Choctaws the goal that ended up being enough. The Choctaws open up the year 1-0, while Florida Southern starts out 0-1.
It was a slow start to the match as neither team was able to get much going in the opening 20 or so minutes of the match. MC begun playing better at the end of the 1st half, and ultimately was able to find a goal before the break.
Folituu put a ball into the box and it landed in front of Ewald who put it home to put MC up 1-0 in his debut. Ewald had been named to the GSC's Top Newcomer Watchlist when it came out prior to this season.
MC dominated the 2nd half of the match, even though they were unable to add to their lead. MC outshot Florida Southern 14-0 in the 2nd half.
The Choctaws had two really good chances in the 2nd half, but the Mocs keeper (AJ Pearce) made really strong saves. He denied fierce strikes from Guiherme Santos in the 72nd minute and then from Folituu in the 81st minute.
Overall for the match, The Choctaws outshot Florida Southern 19-6 and held a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Next up, the Choctaws will travel to Arkansas next weekend to battle Harding University on Friday and Ouachita Baptist on Sunday. After that, MC will head into GSC play.
