DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.--- The 5-seed Mississippi College women's soccer team fell in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Regional to 4-seed Florida Southern 2-1 in Overtime.
Erin Hederman scored the goal for MC. The Lady Choctaws finish up 15-4-2 (10-2-1 GSC) on the season, while Florida Southern improves to 13-1-4 (8-1-1 SSC). Florida Southern will now advance to take on 1-seed Embry-Riddle (Fla.) in the 2nd round of the South Region.
MC had the run of play in the opening 15-20 minutes of the match, but were unable to breakthrough.
Florida Southern then took the lead in the 30th minute with a goal from Lindsey Meyer on a quality finish.
Erin Hederman then found the equalizer for MC in the 41st minute. She received a pass from
Eduarda Silva, and then turned and shot from the edge of the box with a nice finish to make it a 1-1 match. The goal is the 15th of the season for Hederman. That score would remain for the rest of the 1st half.
In the 1st half, MC outshot Florida Southern 8-4. However, Florida Southern held the advantage in shots on goal 3-1.
The 2nd half was back and forth. Each team had periods of control, but neither one was able to find the back of the net.
The match would head in to overtime still tied 1-1.
Alison Jenkins would score the deciding goal of the match for FSC in the 3rd minute of the 1st overtime. That score would stay for the rest of the first OT period.
MC made a change in formation to push forward in the 2nd half needing a goal, but were unable to find one even though they had several quality chances.
The match would end by the 2-1 scoreline.
Erin Hederman led the way for MC in shots with six.
Beatrice Currie also added four.
MC wraps up a successful season for the program, which included: the programs first ever conference tournament title, four 1st team All-GSC selections (five total), and the program's fifth straight appearance in the NCAA tournament.
