CLINTON, Miss. --- Fernanda Cota has been named the Gulf South Conference Player and Freshman of the Week, it was announced on Wednesday (April 21).

Cota (Mexico City, Mexico) helped lead the Lady Choctaws to a 3-1 week that included an upset win over #23 Auburn Montgomery. The big finish lifted MC to the #3 seed in the GSC Tournament that opens Thursday in Montgomery, Ala.

The rookie went 4-0 in both singles and doubles action. She won three of her singles matches in straight sets, also grabbing a three-set victory over Lee University.

In doubles play, she teamed up with Ely Alas at #1 to post an unblemished mark. They won three matches in quick fashion, but their tie-break win in the upset victory over the Warhawks proved pivotal in the final score.

Cota and the Lady Choctaws open the GSC Tournament on Thursday when they face Lee at 10:00 a.m. at the O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery.
