Softball Program Notches 800th Win in Doubleheader Sweep

RAYMOND, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep of Miles College on Wednesday at Rene T. Warren Field on the campus of Hinds Community College, and in the process, tallied the 800th win in program history.

The Lady Choctaws (9-5) put up 19 runs over the first two innings on their way to a 22-3 win in the opener. They backed that up with an 8-0 victory over the Golden Bears (4-10).
 

GAME ONE: MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 22, MILES 3 (5 INNINGS)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  - Freshman Rayne Minor got MC off on the right foot with a leadoff, inside-the-park home run to left-center field.
  - Morgan Bradford, Carly Crawford and Kendal Daniels strung together three straight extra-base hits to give MC a 4-0 lead.
  - Sophomore Gracie Trahan was the ninth batter of the inning and hit a grand slam to put MC ahead 9-0 with no outs in the opening frame.
  - In the second inning, sophomore Annemarie Peavy got in on the action with a three-run home run to extend the lead to 12-0.
  - Bradford poked her third double of the first two innings to drive in two more runs to make the score 16-0.
  - Crawford capped the opening barrage with a towering, three-run shot to give MC 19-0 lead and a 10-run second inning.
  - The Golden Bears scored runs in the third and fourth innings to cut into the lead, but MC pushed the lead back out with three runs in the fourth.
  - Jordan LaFosse tripled home a run and Hayden Claypool chased a run home in the frame.

KEY STATS
  - The 10-run second inning was the first such scoring output since April 12th of last season against Shorter.
  - The 22 runs scored was the most since scoring 22 in a win over Alice Lloyd on May 10, 2016.
  - The 20 hits was the first 20-hit game since MC won the GSC Championship in a victory over UAH on May 7, 2017.
  - Minor, Bradford and LaFosse each notched three-hit games, while seven Lady Choctaws had multi-hit games.
  - Crawford, Peavy and Trahan each drove in four runs, while Crawford LaFosse and Claypool each scored three times.
  - Overall, the Lady Choctaws had 12 extra-base hits in the game after having just 16 total through the first 12 games of the season.
  - Avery Sanders (1-1) tossed the first 4.0 innings for the Lady Choctaws to grab the victory with four strikeouts.
  - Shelby Carlson made her first pitching appearance, getting the final three outs of the contest.
 

GAME TWO: MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 8, MILES 0 (5 INNINGS)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  - The eventual game-winning run scored in the first inning as Minor walked, stole second and third base and scored on a groundout by Shayla McKissock.
  - The Lady Choctaws would add three more runs in the second, highlighted by an RBI single from Claypool to score LaFosse.
  - An RBI groundout by Daniels and a run-scoring single by LaFosse pushed the lead to 6-0 through three innings.
  - McKissock reached on an error in the fourth to drive in her second run of the game and make the score 7-0.
  - The game-winning run scored in the fifth when Adelle Chapman recorded her first career hit and pinch-runner Abbey Salvo scored on a double by Ashley Elsensohn.

KEY STATS
  - LaFosse led the offense with a pair of hits, while Minor scored twice and McKissock drove in two.
  - Hannah Creel (3-3) allowed just one hit with a season-high nine strikeouts over the complete game effort.
  - Emerald Coachman took the loss for the Golden Bears, giving up nine hits and seven earned runs over 4.0 innings.
 

NEXT UP
  - The Lady Choctaws will get back into conference play this weekend with a three-game home series against Union.
  - The series opens on Saturday with a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. at the MC Softball Complex.
