Lady Choctaws Drop Two at #10 West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The Mississippi College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to #10 West Florida at the UWF Softball Complex.

The Lady Choctaws (15-6, 3-3 GSC) fell in a high-scoring affair, 9-6, in the opener, while the Argonauts (21-1, 9-0 GSC) came from behind to get a 3-2 win in the finale.
 

GAME ONE: #10 WEST FLORIDA 9, MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 6

HOW IT HAPPENED

>> The Argos struck first in the opening inning as a pair of two-out, RBI doubles after a short rain delay made the score 2-0 after one frame.
>> MC responded in their next at-bat as senior Brianna Caldwell hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to tie the score.
>> UWF answered with a couple of runs of their own in the second to push the lead out to 4-2.
>> The teams traded runs in the third inning with senior Alexia Harmon brining junior Shayla McKissock home with a squeeze bunt.
>> MC cut the lead back to 5-4 with a run in the fourth as junior Morgan Bradford drove in sophomore Paige Hulin with a sacrfice fly.
>> The Argos extended the advantage out to 7-4 with a couple runs in the fifth as they never did let the Lady Choctaws get the score back even.
>> Freshman Annemarie Peavy hit her second home run of the year in the sixth inning, while Caldwell singled home junior Abbey Salvo to cut the score back to 7-6.
>> UWF would again push the lead back out as they score two unearned runs in the sixth to give the game its final score.

KEY STATS

>> Peavy, Caldwell and senior Kristen Qualls each had two hits for the Lady Choctaws, while Caldwell drove in a team-high three runs.
>> McKissock reached base twice with a triple and a walk, also scoring a run in the contest.
>> Senior Cori Cooper (3-4) took the loss for MC, giving up six hits and four earned runs over 1.2 innings.
>> Sophomore Madi Lancaster came out of the bullpen and held UWF to eight hits and two earned runs over the final 4.1 innings.
>> Teala Howard and Courtney McLellean led the Argos with three hits, while Kathleen Smiley scored twice and Rachel Wright drove in two runs.
>> Kelsey Sweatt (7-0) tossed the complete game for UWF, allowing seven hits and six earned runs with eight strikeouts.
 

GAME TWO: #10 WEST FLORIDA 3, MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

>> The second game was a lower-scoring affair as both teams were held scoreles through the first two innings.
>> Bradford gave the Lady Choctaws the lead in the third inning with a two-out double that scored Hulin.
>> The Argos answered right back in their half of the third with an RBI groundout by Wright that scored Ashleigh McNally.
>> The game remained tied until the fifth when Bradford drove in her second run of the game and third of the day with a single to score freshman Gracie Trahan.
>> the Argos would go on to score the game-tying run in the sixth inning as Rhiannon Sassman drove in Howard with a single to make the score 2-2.
>> With the game appearing destined for extra inning with two outs in the seventh, the Argos walked off with an RBI double from Wright that scored Sara Spears with the game-winner.

KEY STATS

>> Bradford paced the MC offense with two hits and two RBI, while Trahan had a pair of base-knocks.
>> Freshman Hannah Creel (6-1) took her first loss of the season, holding the top offense in the GSC to six hits and three earned runs over 6.2 innings.
>> Howard led UWF with two hits, while Wright drove in a pair of runs.
>> Tori Perkins (7-0) tossed all 7.0 innings for the Argos, allowing five hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts.
 

NEXT UP

>> The Lady Choctaws will face another stiff test next weekend as they host #4 Valdosta State for a three-game series at the MC Softball Complex, starting on Saturday afternoon.
