Lady Choctaws Blank Thorobreds in Doubleheader Sweep

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team opened their home schedule on Wednesday afternoon by outscoring Kentucky State 13-0 over a doubleheader at the MC Softball Complex.

The Lady Choctaws improved to 9-3 on the year, while the Thorobreds dropped to 3-5.
 

GAME ONE: MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 5, KENTUCKY STATE 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Lady Choctaws got the offense going early against KSU, scoring all five of their runs in the first two innings.
- Sophomore Ashley Elsensohn led off with an infield single, stole second and third base and scored on a groundout by senior Makenzie Nieto.
- Two more runs came home to score in the first as senior Alexia Harmon singled home junior Carly Crawford and freshman Annemarie Peavy touched the plate after a KSU error.
- MC tacked on two more runs in the second inning as junior Shayla McKissock drove in freshman Gracie Trahan with a groundout.
- The final run of the contest scored as Elsensohn trotted home on a sacrifice fly from Nieto, giving the game its final score of 5-0 after just two frames.

KEY STATS

- It was all the offense sophomore Madi Lancaster (1-0) would need as she tossed her first shutout, allowing four hits over the 7.0 inning performance.
- Elsensohn led the MC offensive attack with two hits and two runs scored, while Nieto drove in a pair.
- The Lady Choctaws stole eight total bases, led by three from Elsensohn and two from junior Abbey Salvo.
- Paola Flores (1-3) took the loss for the Thorobreds, allowing eight hits and three earned runs over 6.0 innings.
- Moana Pinner had a team-high two hits for KSU.
 

GAME TWO: MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 8, KENTUCKY STATE 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Lady Choctaws again wasted no time getting the offense going in Game 2, putting together five hits, three of the extra-base variety, and five runs in the first frame.
- McKissock recorded her first triple of the season with one out and came home to score on a two-out double from Crawford.
- After Peavy drew a walk, Harmon drove in a pair of runs with a triple to take a 3-0 lead with two outs.
- Junior Morgan Bradford then drew a walk, stole second base and would come home to score with Harmon on a two-run single from junior Hayden Claypool.
- The score remained 5-0 until the third inning when MC loaded the bases with two outs for Nieto, who doubled to the left-center field gap, scoring all three runs to give the game its final score.

KEY STATS

- Freshman Hannah Creel (3-0) kept her record unblemished by tossing the shutout, allowing just one hit and one walk with five strikeouts.
- McKissock led the MC offense with two hits and two runs scored, while Nieto drove in a team-high three runs.
- The MC defense, which was solid all day long, turned three double plays at second base, including two in the second game.
- Casey Grant (1-2) took the loss for the Thorobreds, allowing five hits and five earned runs over 1.0 inning of work.
 

NEXT UP

- The Lady Choctaws are scheduled to be back in action this weekend when they will host Missouri Southern State and Drury in a three-way tournament. MC will play at 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm on Saturday, followed by 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm starts on Sunday.
