Men's Soccer Preview: West Alabama and UAH

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team will open up Gulf South Conference play this week when they host #9 West Alabama on Thursday Sept. 13 and then hit the road this weekend to face UAH on Sunday Sept. 16 in Huntsville, Ala.

MC NOTES
- The Choctaws will head into GSC play with an overall record of 2-1-0.
- MC is coming of its best performance of the season so far with a 5-0 victory over Ouachita Baptist this past Sunday.
- Three Choctaws are currently tied for the lead in goals scored so far this season. Senior Joshua Robinson, junior Victor Bazan and junior Connor Johnson have all netted two goals. Johnson scored his two goals in last Sunday's victory over Ouachita Baptist.  
- MC has currently has two Choctaws tied for the lead in assists. Sophomores Abel Perez and Paul Downey each have two assists so far this season. Downey notched his two assists in last Sunday's match against Ouachita Baptist, which was Downey's first career start.
- The offensive attack for the Choctaws has been aggressive early this season out shooting opponents 67 to 39 and 23 shots on goal and only allowing opponents 17. MC has netted nine goals as a team this season and the team has eight assists in 2018.

WEST ALABAMA NOTES
- The Tigers will enter GSC play with an overall record of 2-0-1 and is currently ranked ninth in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Division II poll.
- UWA is coming off an upset win over the number one team in the nation Lynn College by a score of 2-1.
- The Tigers leading goal-scorer so far in 2018 is graduate senior Harrison Roberts. Roberts has netted two goals this season. Roberts is also the team leader in assists this season with two.
- UWA is the defending GSC Champions and have won the conference four years in a row.

UAH NOTES
- The Chargers will bring an overall record of 2-2-0 into GSC play.
- UAH is coming off a 3-1 victory over Eckerd College last Sunday. And lost to number one ranked Lynn College by a score of 2-1.
-The leading goal-scorer for the Chargers is Sophomore Rafa Moreno, who has netted four goals already in 2018.  
- UAH is also lead by sophomore in the assists column so far this season. Marten Nilop has notched two assist in 2018.

SERIES HISTORY
- MC will be bring in an all-time record of 2-4-0 against West Alabama. In the last meeting between them the Tigers came away with a 2-1 win in double overtime.
- The Choctaws will bring in an overall record of 1-3-1 against UAH. The Chargers ended the season for MC a year ago when the Choctaws fell to the UAH by a score of 1-0 in the GSC Tournament.

MATCH COVERAGE
- Both of these matches will have live stats and live video (weather permitting). Thursday's match against West Alabama is set for a 3:30 P.M. start time at Robert P. Longabaugh Field and coverage will be available on the MC athletics website.  
- Sunday's match against UAH is set for a 3:00 P.M. start time at Charger Park and coverage will be available on the UAH athletics website.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships beginning with the 2016-17 academic year.
