CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team will travel to Florida for the first two games of the 2018 regular season. The Choctaws will face Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale on Aug. 30 and then Barry in Miami Shores on September 1.
MC NOTES
- The Choctaws were 11-3-3 in 2017 and posted a 4-1-0 record on the road.
- MC finished third in the final Gulf South Conference standings in 2017 with a conference record of 7-2-2 and made it to the semi-finals of the Gulf South Conference tournament.
- The Choctaws leading returning goal-scorer from a year ago is SophomoreÂ
Victor Bazan. Bazan scored five goals for MC last season.
- MC will return four Choctaws that tied for the team lead in assists last season. Bazan,
Connor Johnson,
Abel Perez and
Rafael Costa all recorded three assists last year.
- The top two newcomers to watch this season for the Choctaws are graduate transfer
Andy Alanis and freshman
Guilherme Santos. Alanis is a forward from Phoenix, Arizona and is transferring from Grand Canyon University. Santos is a midfielder and comes to MC from Lisbon, Portugal. Â Â
- The Choctaws were predicted to finish third in the GSC preseason poll.
NOVA SOUTHEASTERN NOTES
- The Sharks were 7-4-0 in 2017 and posted a 4-3 record at home.
- Nova will return their leading goal-scorer from 2017. Senior Darwin Lom led the team with six goals.
- NSU will also return its assist leader from 2017. Junior Ignacio Goya led the Sharks with five assists.
- The Sharks were predicted to finish sixth in the Sunshine State Conference preseason poll.
BARRY NOTES
- The Buccaneers were 5-6-2 in 2017 and posted a 3-2-1 record at home.Â
- Barry will return their leading goal-scorer from 2017. Sophomore Toby Fura led the Bucs with four goals.
- BU will not return their assist leader from a year ago. Fura and junior Ander Urkidi are the top returning assist leaders with both players recording one.
- The Bucs were predicted to finish seventh in the Sunshine State Conference preseason poll.
SERIES HISTORY
The Choctaws will bring an all-time record of 2-1-0 into Thursday's match against Nova Southeastern. MC defeated the Sharks last year by a score of 2-1 in Clinton.
The Choctaws will bring an all-time record of 0-1-1 into Saturday's match against Barry. MC tied the Buccaneers 1-1 after two overtime periods last season in Clinton.
