ROME, Ga. --- The Mississippi College softball team claimed a road series victory over Shorter University with an 8-0 win in five innings on Sunday afternoon at Alto Park.
The Lady Choctaws improved to 9-8 on the season with a 4-5 Gulf South Conference mark, while the Hawks fell to 9-8 and 5-3 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lady Choctaws scored in all five innings on Sunday, starting by manufacturing a run as senior
Katherine Lee drew a leadoff walk, stole second base, moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a groundout by junior
Kristen Qualls.
- In the second inning, sophomore
Shayla McKissock singled with two outs to score freshman
Jessica Aron and push the lead to 2-0.
- Junior
Shelby Miller gave the Lady Choctaws a 3-0 in the third inning with a sacrifice fly to score Qualls.
- The fourth inning was when MC broke the game open as freshman
Kayla Murphy hit her second three-run home run in as many games, leaving the yard to left field and giving the Lady Choctaws a 6-0 lead.
- MC would add the deciding runs in the fifth inning as McKissock drove in another run with a single to left, scoring junior
Alexia Harmon.
KEY STATS
- Junior
Cori Cooper (2-0) tossed her second complete game of the week, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts over 5.0 innings as the Lady Choctaws tallied their first shutout of the season.
- McKissock had a team-high two hits, while Murphy drove in a team-high three runs with the long ball.
NEXT UP
- The Lady Choctaws are back in action next weekend for a three-game series with Lee University, marking the first home games of the season at the MC Softball Complex.
