Pitchers Shine as Lady Choctaws Sweep Miles

PLEASANT GROVE, Ala. --- The Mississippi College softball team swept both ends of a doubleheader against Miles College on Tuesday evening at the Miles Softball Field.

MC won the first game by a score of 11-1 in five innings while taking the second game by a score of 7-2. The Lady Choctaws improved to 7-7, while the Golden Bears fell to 0-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lady Choctaws got things going early in the first game as they put up six runs on just one hit, an RBI single by junior Kristen Qualls, through two innings.
- MC would extend the lead to 9-0 in the fourth, as the three-run inning was highlighted by an RBI double from freshman Jessica Aron and an RBI single by junior Alexia Harmon.
- After the Golden Bears cracked the scoreboard in their half of the fourth, MC closed out the game with two runs in the fifth as junior Makenzie Nieto doubled home a run and senior Katherine Lee singled home the final score.
- Junior Penny Nichols was impressive in the circle, giving up just two hits and an unearned run over the complete game effort.

KEY STATS
- Six different Lady Choctaws tallied a hit on the night, while Aron and Harmon each had a team-high two RBI.
- Freshman Kayla Murphy stole a team-high four bases, while Lee and Qualls each had two swipes, as well.
- Murphy, Qualls and junior Brianna Caldwell each scored two runs on the night.
- Nichols needed just 47 pitches as she struck out one batter and walked no one over 5.0 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The second game was dominated by junior transfer Cori Cooper, who struck out 13 batters, which is the second-highest total in the Gulf South Conference this season.
- The Lady Choctaws scored their first run of the contest in the third inning as sophomore Shayla McKissock, who went 3-for-3 on the night, doubled home Harmon and came home to score on a groundout by Murphy.
- The Golden Bears cut the lead in half in the fourth inning, but McKissock struck again in the fifth with a two-out triple and scored on a Murphy double to make the lead 3-1.
- After Murphy scored on a stolen base and a throwing error, Qualls gave MC some breathing room with her fourth home run of the season and 25th of her career to make the score 6-1.
- Qualls would then drive in the final run of the night in the seventh inning with a single to score McKissock.

KEY STATS
- Cooper scattered five hits and one earned run over 7.0 innings.
- McKissock went 3-for-3 with a triple, double and single and scored three runs in the victory.
- Qualls went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Murphy drove in two runs on the night.
 

NEXT UP
- The Lady Choctaws will head to Georgia this weekend for a three-game series at Shorter, starting on Saturday.
