Softball Preview: GSC Opening Weekend Festival

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team will open Gulf South Conference play this weekend at the GSC Opening Weekend Festival, held at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala.

The Lady Choctaws will face Auburn Montgomery on Saturday at noon before coming back Sunday to face Valdosta State at noon and Montevallo at 2:30 p.m.

THE SERIES

The GSC Opening Weekend Festival marks the first Gulf South Conference games of the season in softball. The Lady Choctaws will take on two teams that picked up first-place votes in the preseason poll in Auburn Montgomery (7th) and Valdosta State (2nd). They will also take on Montevallo, who was selected to finish 12th in the GSC preseason poll.

This will be just the 2nd all-time meeting between MC and AUM and Montevallo after playing both GSC newcomers last season. The Lady Choctaws dropped a contest to the Warhawks in Gulf Shores before going on the road to beat the Falcons.

MC and VSU have met 23 previous times with the Blazers holding a 14-9 edge in the series. Last season saw an epic three-game set in Georgia with every game being decided by one run, including an 11-inning win for MC. The Lady Choctaws bounced back from a series-opening loss to take 2-of-3 on the road. VSU answered back in the NCAA Regionals in Pensacola, defeating MC twice to eliminate them from postseason play.
