Women's Soccer Eliminated from NCAA Tournament in the Sweet Sixteen

CLEVELAND, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team had their NCAA tournament run end in the Sweet Sixteen against Lee University by a score of 2-1 in double overtime.
 



 HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams proved why they belonged in the Sweet Sixteen in the first half with hard fought play. MC seemed to have the edge after the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Flames nine to two. The teams went into the break tied at 0-0.
- In the second half the Lady Choctaws were able to strike when Emma Claire Furman was able to deflect a cross into the goal giving MC a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute of the match. The assist went to both Lauren Smith and Scarlett Hodges.
- The Flames were able to respond in the 73rd minute when the team's star Mia Hollingsworth's cross was deflected and found the net which tied the match at 1-1. The match would remained tied at the end of regulation which sent it to overtime.
- After a scoreless first overtime period, the Flames were able to win the match in the second overtime period. Hollingsworth had a shot deflect off of the post which bounce back right to fellow Flame Lauren Peters who put it in the goal and ended the match in the 107th minute.
 



 KEY STATS
- The teams were eventually matched and it showed in a very exciting and competitive match. MC outshot Lee 16 to 14 with both teams having eight shots on goal. The Flames goalkeeper had one more save (7) than MC's Andrea McDonald (6).
- The loss will knock the Lady Choctaws out of the NCAA Tournament ending their run and their season.
- The Sweet Sixteen appearance was the furthest the Lady Choctaws had made it in the NCAA tournament in program history.
 



 NEXT UP
- The Lady Choctaws will return home and start their offseason activities.
- The MC Women's Soccer program would let to thank their eight seniors one last time for everything they gave to the program. Lauren Smith, Lauren Dodge Samantha Carson, Gaylynn Cooper, Julie Reid, Andrea McDonald, Peace Gill and Cara Benedict. Congratulations on a fantastic final season.
