CLEVELAND, Miss. --- The Mississippi College football team wrapped up the 2018 season with a 28-21 loss at Delta State University on Saturday afternoon at McCool Stadium.
The Choctaws closed out the season with a record of 3-7 and 1-6 in the Gulf South Conference, while the Statesmen went 2-8 with a 2-6 mark in the league.
TURNING POINT
- The Choctaws were trailing 28-21 with under two minutes remaining and threw an interception on a wide receiver pass from
Cole Rotenberry to
Moregan Sharp.
- The Statesmen would run out the clock and hold on for the 28-21 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Statesmen would jump out to a quick 14-0 lead as Kelon Wilson rushed in from two yards out in the first quarter and Leon Green caught a nine-yard pass from Patrick Shegog to open the second period.
- DSU appeared poised to extend the lead to 21-0, but the MC defense came up big with a fourth-down stop that turned the ball over on downs on the Choctaw side of the field.
- MC took over and went 84 yards on six plays, finishing with a four-yard run from
Aaron Feazelle that made the score 14-7 near the end of the first half.
- On the next drive for the Statesmen,
Turner Rotenberry picked off his fourth pass of the season and set up the Choctaws at the DSU 27-yard line with 1:31 to go in the first half.
- Feazelle found
Ja'Mori Mark on the very next play for a 27-yard touchdown pass that tied the game at 14-14 going into halftime.
- The Statesmen jumped back out in the third quarter with a pair of touchdowns on another rush from Wilson and a pass from Shegog to Green, making the score 28-14 going to the fourth quarter.
- Led by 5th-year senior
Khiran Williams under center after an injury to Feazelle, the Choctaws would again cut the lead in half as
Tiberias Lampkin jumped over the pile at the goal line, making the score 28-21 with 10:56 to go.
- After forcing DSU to punt, the Choctaws took over at their own eight-yard line with 8:43 remaining and would get the ball past midfield before the interception that wrapped things up for DSU.
KEY STATS
- The Choctaws would rush for 254 yards on 50 carries, led by Lampkin with 25 carries for 117 yards and a touchdown.
- Patrick Shegog rushed for 203 yards on 20 carries, also throwing for 90 yards and two scores on 10-of-14 passing.

Elijah Rogers led the Choctaws with 12 tackles, including nine solo stops, while
Quentin Frazier had eight tackles with a sack.
- David Herrington had a team-high 13 tackles for Delta State to go along with 2.0 tackles for loss.

- The Choctaws have wrapped up the 2018 season and are scheduled to open the 2019 campaign on September 7th at Alcorn State in Lorman, Miss.
