CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team will open Gulf South Conference Tournament play on Tuesday afternoon when they host Montevallo at 2:00 p.m. at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.
MC NOTES
- The Lady Choctaws will come into the tournament with an overall record of 14-2 and a GSC record of 12-1 and are appearing in the tournament for the third straight year, coming in as the #2 seed.
- The Lady Choctaws have played for the GSC Championship in each of their first two seasons of eligibility since returning to Division II. They opened those tournaments with a win over West Georgia 2-1 in overtime in 2016 and a victory over West Alabama 5-1 in 2017.
- The Lady Choctaws landed four players on the post-season All-Gulf South Conference teams.
Gaylynn Cooper garnered First Team All-Conference honors, while
Samantha Carson,
Liza Wise and
Gabby Kayser earned Second Team All-Conference honors.
- The top three goal scorers on the year for the Lady Choctaws are Laruen Smith,
Emma Claire Furman and
Katie Taylor. Smith was the team leader for 2018 netting seven goals, Furman was able to score five on the year and Taylor netted four for the team this season.
MONTEVALLO NOTES
- The Falcons will come into the tournament with an overall record of 8-6-3 and a GSC record of 7-5-1. Montevallo will come into the tournament as the #7 seed.
- Montevallo is coming off of a strong finish to the 2018 regular season. In their final three matches they went 2-0-1 with a 2-0 victory over Delta State, 1-1 tie against Christian Brothers and a 4-0 victory against Union in the regular season finale.
- The top three players to watch for the Falcons are Romee Contreras, Allye Darnell and Medhali Hernandez. Contreras is the team's leading goal scorer with nine on the season and she has four assists as well. Darnell and Hernandez have both netted six goals with two assists each this season.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Lady Choctaws have an all-time record of 3-0 against Montevallo.
- The two teams met back on October 19th of this year at Montevallo with the Lady Choctaws coming from behind to grab a 2-1 victory. Senior
Lauren Smith scored both goals as MC tied a school record with their 11th straight win in the contest.
