Women's Soccer Preview: West Florida and Valdosta State

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team will resume Gulf South Conference play this weekend, when they travel to Pensacola, Fla. to take on West Florida on Friday, and to Valdosta, Ga. to take on Valdosta State on Sunday.
 
MC NOTES
  • In their most recent action, the Lady Choctaws (4-1-1, 3-1 GSC) defeated Shorter University 2-0 on Friday, Sept. 15 and fell 1-0 in overtime to Lee University on Sunday, Sept. 17.
  • The Lady Choctaws checked in at number seven in the latest United Soccer Coaches Soccer NCAA Division II South Regional Poll.
  • Through six matches, the Lady Choctaw offense is averaging 1.33 goals per match. MC has taken 88 shots, for an average of 14.7 per contest.  Of MC's 88 shot taken, 32 have been on goal.
  • Sophomore forward Emma Claire Furman leads all Lady Choctaws with four points and two goals scored on the season. Samantha Carson, Lauren Kate Carter, Caitlin Hayes, Holly Pascoe, Lauren Smith and Lindsey Stephenson have all scored a goal on the season.   
  • Sophomore midfielder Katie Taylor leads all Lady Choctaws with two assists on the season. Hannah Bailey, Carter, Hayes, Emily McNair, and Stephenson have all contributed for an assist on the year.
  • On defense, the MC backline has allowed just two goals in six games of action. The Lady Choctaws are currently allowing just eight shots per game, while having allowed just 19 shots on goal on the season.
  • In goal, Andrea McDonald has seen the bulk of playing time for the Lady Choctaws, having started and played in four of MC's six matches. McDonald (2-1-1) currently leads the conference in goals against average (0.235), save percentage (0.933), fewest goal allowed (1), and shutouts. Gabby Kayser (2-0), who has started and played in two matches between the posts for MC, holds a goals against average of 0.50 and has recorded one shutout on the 2017 season.

WEST FLORIDA NOTES
  • West Florida (5-0, 2-0 GSC) defeated West Alabama 3-2 and Alabama Huntsville 4-0 in their opening slate of GSC play last weekend.
  • In the most recent United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Poll, West Florida found themselves ranked at #5, in addition to being ranked number one in the south region poll.
  • The Argos head into Friday's matchup leading the GSC in total shots taken (116), shots per game (23.20), shots on goal (52), shots on goal per game (10.4), goals (19) and average goals per game (3.8).
  • Deneisha Blackwood (4) and Jessica Quixley (3) pace the Argos with seven of the teams 19 goals scored.
  • Leonie Kreil (4) and Shantell Thompson (3) have combined for seven of West Florida's 12 assists on the season.
  • The West Florida defense, led by keeper Katelyn Burkhart, has allowed just three goals on the year. Burkhart brings a goal against average of 0.63 into this Friday's matchup with MC
 
VALDOSTA STATE NOTES
  • The Blazers (4-1, 2-1 GSC) are coming off of a previous weekend of action that saw them lose at Alabama Huntsville 2-0 on Friday, Sept. 15, and knock off West Alabama 4-3 on Sunday, Sept. 17 in Livingston, Ala.
  • The Blazers debuted at number 10 in the latest United Soccer Coach's NCAA Divison II South Regional Rankings released on Tuesday (Sept. 19).
  • Through five matches, Valdosta State ranks second in the conference in average shots per game (19.4) and tied for first in the conference in shots on goal (52) and shots on goal per match (10.4).
  • Taylor Snell's five goals and two game-winning scores both rank tied for first in the conference, while her 12 total points accumulated ranks for first in the conference.
  • In the assist stat column, Mallory McDaniel paces the GSC with five so far in 2017. Snell ranks second on the team in assists with two.
  • The Valdosta State defense has allowed seven goals in six games, for an average of 1.4 goal surrendered per contest. Goalkeeper Caroline Ember has seen action in 261 of the 457 minutes for the Blazers. Ember boasts a goals against average of 1.03, having allowed just three goals all season.
  • Prior to taking on MC on Sunday, the Blazers will square off against Delta State on Friday, Sept. 22.
 
MATCH COVERAGE
  • Friday's match at West Florida is set to begin at 7:30 p.m., while Sunday's contest with Valdosta will kick off at 12:00 p.m.

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC is recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
