Softball Preview: Union

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team will head back out on the road for a three-game series with Union University this weekend.

Due to expected inclement weather, the teams will play a single game on Sunday (Mar. 12) at 1:00 pm, followed by a Monday doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. All three games are scheduled to be played at Fesmire Softball Field.

ALL-TIME SERIES
MC and Union have met eight previous times with the Lady Choctaws holding a 6-2 edge in the series, including six straight victories. Last season, MC went to Jackson, TN and won all three games at Fesmire Softball Field, outscoring the Bulldogs, 24-5. The Lady Choctaws tallied 36 hits and struck out 18 Union batters over the three-game set.

SERIES NOTES
- The Lady Choctaws played their first home games of the 2017 season last weekend against Shorter, dropping 2-of-3 games to the Hawks. MC will get back on the road for their next two GSC series against Union (Mar. 12-13) and Christian Brothers (Mar. 18-19). The Lady Choctaws will have a home doubleheader against Alcorn State (Mar. 15), but the next conference matchup in Clinton is against West Georgia (Mar. 25).
- The Lady Choctaws have been off and running in the 2017 season, leading the Gulf South Conference with 45 stolen bases through 20 games. Senior Haley Thompson has swiped a league-high 20 bags, including stealing three in three different games this season. Junior Katherine Lee (58) and Thompson (47) rank 4th and 5th in school history in career stolen bases.
- The Lady Choctaws dropped two of three games to Shorter University in Clinton last weekend. The first game of the series went to 11 innings with the Hawks coming away victorious, 3-2. MC responded with a 3-1 win before SU clinched the series with a 5-3 win on Sunday.
- Senior Tylan Buckley and sophomore Kristen Qualls each homered in Sunday's loss, while sophomore Penny Nichols gave up just one earned run over 14.1 innings pitched on the weekend. The Orange City, Fla. native gave up just one walk in 3.1 hitless innings of relief on Sunday.
- Brooke O'Hair is in her 11th season as MC's head softball coach, already sitting atop the list of most wins in school history. Of the six 30-win seasons in school history, the former Mississippi State second baseman has achieved the feat five times. Following the school-record 39 wins in 2016 and the nine this season, O'Hair is just 12 victories away from 300 for her career. She was named the NCCAA National Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Choctaws to a national championship last season.
- On Friday, February 10th, the Lady Choctaws played at Montevallo, which was the 1,200th game in Mississippi College softball history. The first game on record was on March 14, 1986 when MC played Troy State in Columbus, MS (L, 13-14). The program is also just two wins away from 700 with the first coming on March 22, 1986 in a 6-2 victory over Tennessee-Martin in Florence, AL.
- The Bulldogs, led by 10th-year head coach Heather Hall, have been a part of three conference sweeps this season, dropping all three on the road to Shorter and Delta State and winning three from Christian Brothers at home.
- As a team, they are hitting .323, led by Gabby Morris (.433), who has a team-high six doubles and three home runs. Ashley Scott (.375) leads the team with 21 RBI, while LaDesha Nelson (.368) has a team-high nine stolen bases.
- Hannah Ridolfi (7-4, 2.60 ERA) leads the team with 67.1 innings pitched, while Morris (4-3, 3.21 ERA) has a team-high 41 strikeouts and an opponents' batting average of just .211.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC is recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
