LIVINGSTON, Ala. --- The Mississippi College softball team closed out a road series with West Alabama, grabbing an 11-2 win in six innings on Sunday afternoon at the UWA Softball Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lady Choctaws (9-8, 3-3 GSC) got the scoring going in the first inning as senior
Tylan Buckley hit her second home run in as many days, giviing MC a 1-0 lead.
- The Tigers (9-8, 4-2 GSC) answered back in their half of the first, scoring an unearned run of MC starter
Penny Nichols, who got out of the bases loaded jam without further damage.
- Junior
Katherine Lee gave the Lady Choctaws the lead for good with a two-run triple in the second inning, scoring sophomores
Kristen Qualls and
Alexia Harmon, who singled to open the inning.
- Lee would come home to score on a West Alabama error, and MC would take a 4-1 lead.
- After a quick second inning from Nichols, the Lady Choctaws blew the game open in the third with five runs, highlighted by RBI singles from Harmon and senior
Haley Thompson.
- In the third, MC took advantage of five hits and four errors by the Tigers to take the 9-1 advantage.
- Despite the Tigers scoring in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game, MC would push the lead back out to 11-2 with two runs in the sixth.
- Senior
Megan Everett doubled home a run, while sophomore
Makenzie Nieto drove Everett in with a sacrifice fly.
- Nichols got out of the sixth inning without allowing a run, and the game ended one inning early.
KEY STATS
- Harmon led the MC offense with three hits, scoring two runs with an RBI.
- Thompson and Buckley each had multiple hits for MC, while Lee drove in a team-high two runs.
- Nichols (5-3) tossed her fifth complete game of the season, giving up just two hits and two unearned runs to a team that scored 20 on Saturday in the doubleheader.
- She also struck out four batters with no walks in the win.
- Andrea Edmonds (6-6) took the loss for the Tigers, giving up 11 hits and six earned runs over 6.0 innings.
NEXT UP
- The Lady Choctaws will play their first home games of the season next weekend, hosting Shorter for a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday.
