Men's Soccer Preview: Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team will resume Gulf South Conference play when they host Alabama Huntsville on Friday, Oct. 6 and travel to Livingston, Ala. to take on West Alabama on Sunday, Oct. 8.
 
MC NOTES
- The Choctaws, (8-1-1, 5-1 GSC) currently sit atop the Gulf South Conference, with a three-point advantage over second-place Christian Brothers.
- The Choctaws boast a record of 4-0 on the road, and feature a mark of 4-1-1 at home in 2017.
- In their most recent action, the Choctaws bested Christian Brothers 1-0 on Friday, Sept. 29, and fell 3-0 to Union on Sunday, Oct. 1.
- MC found themselves ranked number five in the most recent United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II South Regional Rankings.
- On the offensive side of the ball, the Choctaws head into this weekend's slate of GSC action leading the conference in shots taken (176), shots per game (17.6), shots on goal (77), shots on goal per game (7.7), goals scored (20), goals scored per contest (2), total points accumulated (57), points per game (5.7), assists (17) and assists per match (1.7).
- Senior midfielder Horacio Gutierrez Jr. currently paces the MC attack with five goals scored, a mark that also ranks second in the conference.
- Jacob Farthing, Victor Bazan, Connor Johnson, Dinho Zwane and Marco Profumo have all netted three goals for the Choctaws in 2017.
- Farthing currently leads both the Choctaws and the GSC in assists with four on the season. Farthing's three game-winning scores also lead all GSC individuals.
- On defense, the Choctaws have allowed nine goals through 10 matches, for an average of 0.9 allotted per match that ranks second in the conference.
- Goalkeeper Humberto Pelaez (8-1-1) paces the GSC with four shutouts on the season to go along with 40 saves that ranks second in the conference, and a 0.87 goals against average that ranks third in the conference.
- Pelaez's 30 career wins in goals ties for most in MC history. The senior keeper needs just one more win to become the winningest goalkeeper in MC history.
 
UAH NOTES
- The Chargers (4-4-1, 3-0-1 GSC) currently find themselves ranked third in the GSC standings.
- In their most recent action, the Chargers tied 2-2 with Montevallo on Friday, Sept. 29 and knocked off Auburn Montgomery 5-0 on Sunday, Oct. 1.
- The Charger offense has scored 15 goals in nine games, for an average of 1.67 per match.
- Senior forward Jordan Wright paces the UAH attack with five goals scored, a  mark that ranks second among GSC players. Wright also ranks second in the conference in total points, with 11 on the season.
- In the assist stat column, Corentin Diverres and Gunnar Birgisson both lead the way for UAH with two apiece.
- On defense the Charges are currently averaging 2 goals allowed per game, having surrendered 18 through their first nine matches.
- Goalkeeper Myles Fullen (4-3-1) brings a goals against average of 1.73 into Friday's action.
 
WEST ALABAMA NOTES
- The Tigers (7-2, 3-1 GSC) currently sit in fourth place in the GSC standings.
- West Alabama's most recent action saw them defeat Auburn Montgomery 3-0 on Friday, Sept. 29 and down Montevallo 2-0 on Sunday, Oct.  1.
- The Tigers sit in second place in the conference in several offensive statistics, including shots taken (126), shots on goal (59), goals scored (18), assists (15) and assists per game (1.66). West Alabama shares the top spot with MC for average goals scored per game, at 2 per contest.
- Senior forward Ali Brador currently leads all players in the GSC in both points (14) and goals scored (6), while junior midfielder Jean-Baptiste Meynie currently sits tied with Farthing for the conference lead in assists (4).
- On defense, the Tigers 1.00 goals allowed per game ranks tied for third in the conference. Goalkeeper Brad Louis (6-2) sports a 1.11 goals against average on the year, while having recorded two shutouts.
- Prior to their match against MC, the Tigers will travel to Cleveland, Miss. to take on Delta State on Friday.
 
SERIES HISTORY
- The Choctaws bring an all-time record of 1-2 against Alabama Huntsville, and a mark of 2-3 against West Alabama.
- In their most recent meeting in 2016, The Choctaws knocked off Alabama Huntsville 1-0 in Huntsville, Ala. The Choctaws met the Tigers twice last season, splitting with them over their two matchups. MC knocked off West Alabama 1-0 in their regular-season meeting on Sept. 30, and fell 1-0 to the Tigers in the semifinals of the GSC Postseason Tournament on Nov. 4.

- Friday's match vs. Alabama Huntsville will be available for viewing through Facebook Live on the Mississippi College Athletics' Facebook page.
- Friday's match versus Alabama Huntsville will begin at 3:00 p.m., and Sunday's match at West Alabama is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC is recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
