FLORENCE, Ala. --- The Mississippi College softball team dropped both ends of a Saturday doubleheader to #6 North Alabama at the UNA Softball Complex.
The Lady Choctaws (28-14, 15-11 GSC) lost the first game 10-2, while the Lions (39-5, 23-3 GSC) took the second game, 8-0.
In the opener, UNA took an early lead with a couple unearned runs in the first inning, but the score remained 2-0 through three frames.
MC broke through in the fourth when freshman
Kristen Qualls led off the inning and reached on a hit-by-pitch. Pinch-runner
Haley Thompson stole second base and came home to score on an RBI double from freshman
Alexia Harmon.
Harmon advanced to third on a groundout, but the game-tying run was stranded at third going to the bottom of the fourth.
The Lions took advantage of another MC error in the fourth as pinch-hitter Shelby Woodard hit a two-out, three-run home run to take a 5-1 advantage through four frames.
The Lady Choctaws would chip away at the lead when they loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning, and junior
Megan Everett came home to score on a groundout by Qualls.
UNA put the game away with a four-run fifth inning and a run in the sixth to close out the game.
Sophomore
Katherine Lee led MC with two hits on the day. Senior
Carlie Sargent (14-8) took the loss for MC, giving up 12 hits with five earned runs.
Hillary Carpenter (18-3) grabbed the win for UNA, giving up six hits with two earned runs.
In the second game, Raven Cole (20-1) tossed a no-hitter for the Lions, striking out eight with three walks over 6.0 innings.
Freshman
Penny Nichols (13-5) went toe-to-toe with Cole through four innings, only allowing a two-out RBI single in the fourth to give UNA a 1-0 lead.
The Lions broke the game open in the fifth with a five-run frame and scored twice in the sixth to finish the game.
The Lady Choctaws and Lions will be back in action on Sunday for the series finale at 1:00 p.m.
