Softball Preview: North Alabama

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team will open a tough stretch of Gulf South Conference games when they travel to the University of North Alabama to face the #6 Lions in a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 2:00 pm, followed by a single game on Sunday at 1:00 pm.

THE COACHES
The Lady Choctaws are led by 10th-year head coach Brooke O'Hair, who is the winningest skipper in Lady Choctaw history and picked up her 250th career win on February 28th against West Alabama. She has led MC to four 30-win seasons, three NCAA Regional appearances and two NCCAA World Series.

The Lions are led by 3rd-year head coach Ashley Cozart, who has led UNA to a 113-37 record. In her career, Cozart is 304-82.

THE SERIES
The Lady Choctaws and Lions have met 31 previous times with MC holding a 19-12 edge in the series. The teams have not played since 1995 and have not played in Florence since 1993.

LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Choctaws swept a doubleheader from Millsaps on Wednesday, outscoring the Majors 16-1. With the wins, MC has now clinched a berth in the NCCAA MidEast Regional (May 11-13).

The Lions are coming off a series win at #11 Alabama Huntsville last weekend. The teams split a doubleheader on Saturday, and UNA picked up a 4-0 win on Sunday.

MILESTONE WATCH
Senior Carlie Sargent is MC's all-time leader in strikeouts/game, posting 6.25 per contest in her career. She also ranks 3rd in school history in walks/game (1.28), 4th in strikeouts (288) and 6th in lowest ERA (1.93).

Senior infielder Kimmie Conley ranks 4th in school history in games played (165), 5th in walks (55), 7th in RBI (81), 9th in doubles and 10th in at-bats (434).

Junior outfielder Megan Everett is also climbing the record books, ranking 8th in MC history in RBI (79) and hits (139) and 11th in at-bats (428).

The Lady Choctaws are also approaching team records in the final weeks. They have stolen 102 bases this season, the 2nd-most in school history (109, 2014). MC's 25 home runs this season is also the 2nd-best mark in school history (37, 2011).

THE MATCHUP
Since starting the season 6-8, MC has gone 22-4, inclulding a 13-game-winning streak, which is the 2nd-longest in MC history.

Freshman Kristen Qualls (.390) is the team's leading hitter with 10 doubles and 35 RBI. Junior Tylan Buckley (.389) went 6-for-6 with 7 RBI and two home runs in MC's sweep of Millsaps. She now leads the team with nine home runs and 34 runs scored.

Junior Megan Everett (.353) leads the Lady Choctaws with 47 hits in a team-high 133 at-bats. She joins Qualls, freshman Alexia Harmon, junior Lauren Mulligan and senior Madison Oliver as Lady Choctaws to start every game this season.

Sargent (14-7, 1.64 ERA) leads the Lady Choctaws with 142 strikeouts and five shutouts in 22 appearances. Freshman Penny Nichols (13-4, 2.41 ERA) tossed her third career shutout at Millsaps.

The Lions are led at the plate by Brooklynn Clark (.489), who leads the team with 47 RBI. Courtney Shields (.394) leads the team with 16 doubles, while Annay Gayle Norris (.369) and Reagan Tittle (.366) have a team-high eight home runs.

Hillary Carpenter (17-3, 1.89 ERA) leads the team with five shutouts in 122.1 innings pitched. Raven Cole (19-1, 2.52 ERA) has a team-high 119 strikeouts in 114.0 innings pitched.
