HATTIESBURG, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team will step out of conference to play a pair of make-up games against William Carey on Wednesday afternoon at Joseph and Nancy Fail Field. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
THE COACHESThe Lady Choctaws are led by 10th-year head coach
Brooke O'Hair, who is the winningest skipper in Lady Choctaw history and picked up her 250th career win on February 28th against West Alabama. She has led MC to four 30-win seasons, three NCAA Regional appearances and two NCCAA World Series.
The Crusaders are led by 2nd-year head coach Craig Fletcher, who has posted a 69-26 record and has WC ranked #9 in the latest NAIA poll.
THE SERIESThis Lady Choctaws and Crusaders have played 25 previous times with WC holding a 13-12 edge in the series. MC swept a doubleheader in Clinton on February 11th, winning 7-6 in extra innings and 4-2 in the finale.
LAST TIME OUTThe Lady Choctaws are coming off their 3rd straight GSC series sweep after winning three at West Georgia in Carrollton last weekend. Freshman
Kristen Qualls had two game-winning hits in the series, including a three-run double on Saturday.
The Crusaders have won five straight games and 11 of their last 12, including a 10-inning victory over Auburn Montgomery, who is ranked #1 in the NAIA poll.
MILESTONE WATCHSargent is MC's all-time leader in strikeouts/game, posting 6.38 per contest in her career. She also ranks 3rd in school history in walks/game (1.28), 5th in strikeouts (270) and 6th in lowest ERA (1.91).
Senior infielder
Kimmie Conley ranks 7th in school history in RBI (78) and walks (53) and is 9th in games played (158) and 11th in at-bats (415).
Junior outfielder
Megan Everett is also climbing the record books, ranking 8th in MC history in RBI (73), 10th in hits (128) and 12th in at-bats (403).
THE MATCHUPThe Lady Choctaws come into the mid-week games as one of the hottest teams in the country, winning 13 straight and 18 of their last 19. The 13-game streak is the longest for a Lady Choctaw team since winning 16 straight in 1987.
Following the West Florida series on February 20th, MC was 6-8 with an 0-6 mark in the Gulf South Conference. Since then, the Lady Choctaws are 18-1 with a 14-1 mark in league play. MC pitchers are 18-1 with a 1.41 ERA over that span.
Sargent (13-4) has been dominant in the month of March, going 8-1 with a 0.95 ERA, 76 strikeouts and just six walks. As a staff, the Oxford, Ala. native and freshman
Penny Nichols (10-4) have gone 13-1 with a 1.24 ERA, 88 strikeouts and just eight walks in 96.1 innings.
Qualls (.410) is MC's leading hitter this season with eight home runs, nine doubles and 31 RBI. In GSC games, the former Madison Central native is hitting .452 with six doubles and five home runs. In the series against UWG, Qualls hit a go-ahead 2-run home run in the second game to go along with 3-run double in the finale.
The Crusaders are led at the plate by Harli Crow (.354) and Cecilia Lawn (.352). The two have combined to score 30 runs with 20 RBI and four stolen bases.
Rachel Hickman (8-4, 1.10 ERA) and Hannah Moak (7-4, 1.55 ERA) have been dominant in the circle for WC. The two have combined for 134 strikeouts and just 41 walks on the season.
