CARROLLTON, Ga. --- The Mississippi College softball team has now won 12 straight games and 17-of-18 after a doubleheader sweep of West Georgia on Friday afternoon at the University Softball Field.
The streak is the longest for an MC softball team since the Lady Choctaws won 12 in-a-row in the 2007 season. After cruising to a 4-1 win in the opener, MC came back to beat the Wolves (21-16) in the second game, 5-1.
Senior
Carlie Sargent (12-4) continued her dominance in the circle, tossing 30 consecutive scoreless innings before UWG hit the scoreboard on the final swing of the game in the opener. The Oxford, Ala. native gave up just four hits and struck out seven in the victory.
Senior
Madison Oliver got the scoring going for MC in the second with an RBI double to score freshman
Kristen Qualls.
The big inning came in the fifth when the Lady Choctaws scored three runs, highlighted by an RBI single from pinch-hitter
Makenzie Nieto. The freshman also scored in the inning on a bases loaded walk to senior
Lauren Mulligan.
That was all the help Sargent would need as she tallied her 15th complete game of the year, dropping her ERA to 1.50 witih 120 punchouts and 28 walks. She is now 5th in school history with 266 career strikeouts.
In the second game, the Wolves got on the board first with a couple of singles to lead off the second inning and a squeeze bunt to take a 1-0 advantage.
The Lady Choctaws were held in check for five innings as they trailed going to the sixth. Junior
Tylan Buckley led off the inning with a single and Qualls gave MC the 2-1 lead with her eighth home run of the season.
Oliver extended the lead with a two-out solo home run in the sixth, her second of the season.
Buckley would give MC more insurance in the seventh with her sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot to push the lead out to 5-1.
Freshman
Penny Nichols (10-4) would take over from there, retiring the final eight batters of the game to collect her 10th win of the season. The Orange City, Fla. native gave up just two singles after UWG scored their lone run in the second inning.
Buckley, Qualls and junior
Megan Everett each had multiple hits in the second game, while freshman
Alexia Harmon had two base-knocks in the first game.
