Softball Preview: West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. --- The Mississippi College softball team will close out their March schedule with a three-game series at the University of West Georgia at the University Softball Field. The teams will play a doubleheader at 2:00 pm (CT) on Friday, followed by the series finale on Saturday at 10:00 am (CT).

THE COACHES
The Lady Choctaws are led by 10th-year head coach Brooke O'Hair, who is the winningest skipper in Lady Choctaw history and picked up her 250th career win on February 28th against West Alabama. She has led MC to four 30-win seasons, three NCAA Regional appearances and two NCCAA World Series.

The Wolves are led by 5th-year head coach Mandy Morgan, who has posted a 147-251 record in her eight years as a head coach between UWG and Lynn.

THE SERIES
The Lady Choctaws hold a 9-4 edge in the series, but this will be the first-ever meetings between the schools in Carrollton. Last season, MC took 2-of-3 games in Clinton that saw them outscore the Wolves just 13-12.

LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Choctaws are coming off a three-game sweep of Christian Brothers that saw them outscore the Lady Bucs on the weekend, 21-1. MC hit six home runs, while senior Carlie Sargent tossed 14.0 scoreless innings against CBU.

The Wolves split a road doubleheader with Tuskegee on Wednesday, as Megan Roberts tossed her first shutout in a 3-0 win. The Golden Tigers bounced back for a 3-2 win in the second game.

MILESTONE WATCH
Sargent is MC's all-time leader in strikeouts/game, posting 6.42 per contest in her career. She also ranks 3rd in school history in walks/game (1.31), 6th in lowest ERA (1.93) and strikeouts (259).

Senior infielder Kimmie Conley ranks 7th in school history in RBI (78) and walks (50) and is 9th in games played (155) and 11th in at-bats (407).

Junior outfielder Megan Everett is also climbing the record books, ranking 8th in MC history in RBI (73), 10th in hits (126) and 12th in at-bats (392).

THE MATCHUP
The Lady Choctaws come into the series winners of 10 straight games and 15 of their last 16. After opening the season with six straight GSC losses, MC is 11-1 in league play since.

Sargent (11-4, 1.53 ERA) has been dominant in the circle, especially in the month of March, going 6-1 with a 0.80 ERA and her only loss coming in 10 innings at Shorter (3-2). She has 65 strikeouts with six walks and has tossed three straight shutouts coming into this weekend's games. For her efforts, she has won three of the last four NCCAA Pitcher of the Week honors and two straight.

Freshman Kristen Qualls (.407) was named the NCCAA Hitter of the Week after going 8-of-14 (.571) with three home runs, six RBI and four runs scored over five victories.

Junior Tylan Buckley (.351) led the MC offense in a 7-0 victory over CBU on Sunday with two home runs, including a grand slam. Her five RBI was a single-game high for a Lady Choctaw this season.

The Wolves got off to a 10-1 start this season, but have gone 11-13 in the 24 games since. UWG dropped a series at West Florida last weekend, winning the opener 7-1, but falling 6-2 and 10-0 in the next two games.

Katie Spinks (.382) is the team's leading hitter with four doubles and four triples. Jordan Corbin (.333) leads the team with six home runs and 32 RBI. The Wolves use a pitcher-by-committee strategy as five different pitchers have tossed 20+ innings this season.
