Softball Preview: Union

JACKSON, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College softball team will hit the road for their second straight Gulf South Conference series as they travel to face Union University at Fesmire Softball Field. The series opens Sunday with a doubleheader at 1:00 pm, followed by the series finale on Monday at 12:00 pm.

THE COACHES
The Lady Choctaws are led by 10th-year head coach Brooke O'Hair, who is the winningest skipper in Lady Choctaw history and picked up her 250th career win on Sunday against West Alabama. She has led MC to four 30-win seasons, three NCAA Regional appearances and two NCCAA World Series.

The Bulldogs are led by 9th-year head coach Heather Hall, who has 279 career victories, including two 40-win seasons in 2011 and 2012. She led Union to an NCCAA national championship in 2013.

THE SERIES
The Lady Choctaws have played five previous times with MC holding a 3-2 edge in the series after a three-game sweep of the Bulldogs in Clinton last season. Two of the games were decided by one run, whlie the other was a 2-0 victory for MC. The Bulldogs won both meetings between the schools in 2014.

LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Choctaws traveled to Rome, Ga. and came back with a series win over Shorter, bouncing back with two victories after dropping the opener in 10 innings, 3-2. MC run-ruled the Hawks 8-0 in the second game and came back for a 5-3 win in the finale.

The Bulldogs have lost seven straight games, including a three-game sweep at the hands of GSC-leading Delta State at home last weekend. Union was outscored 34-10 in the series, but played the finale to a close 5-3 score.

MILESTONE WATCH
Senior Carlie Sargent ranks 3rd in school history in strikeouts/game (6.00), 8th in strikeouts (211) and 9th in lowest ERA (2.19). She became the 8th player in school history to record 200 strikeouts with 10 against Shorter on Saturday.

Senior infielder Kimmie Conley ranks 7th in school history in RBI (73) and is tied for 12th in career games played (147).

Junior outfielder Megan Everett became the 20th player in school history to reach the century mark in hits, pulling off the feat against Delta State. She now ranks 12th in school history with 115.

THE MATCHUP
The Lady Choctaws have now won 7-of-8 games and are 5-1 in their last six Gulf South Conference games after opening 0-6 in league play. The lone loss in the last eight games came in 10 innings at Shorter, 3-2.

Sophomore Katherine Lee (.375) is now tied for the team-lead in batting average after going 5-of-11 with four runs scored and five stolen bases against Shorter. She has now scored a run in five straight games and has scored multiple runs four times this season.

Junior Ty Buckley (.343) returned to the lineup after missing nine games due to injury. The Philadelphia native has two home runs and ranks third on the team with five stolen bases.

Sargent (6-4, 2.23 ERA) leads the team with 69.0 innings pitched and 65 strikeouts on the season, racking up 17 in the two games against Shorter. Freshman Penny Nichols (6-4, 2.81 ERA) tossed her first career shutout on Saturday against the Hawks.

Haley Barnette (.306) and Reagan Schrader (.303) are the team's leading hitters, while Schrader has a team-high seven doubles and three home runs. Emily Bennett (.266) leads the team with 11 stolen bases and 21 runs scored. Paige Taylor (4-13, 7.53 ERA) leads Union with 70.2 innings pitched in 19 appearances and 16 starts.
