Offense Gets Going on Second Day of Ronnie Hawkins Invitational

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. --- The Mississippi College softball team earned another split on Day 2 of the Ronnie Hawkins Invitational, hosted by Ouachita Baptist University.

The Lady Choctaws (2-2) dropped Sunday's opener to Harding University, 7-6, but bounced back for a 9-0 victory over OBU to close out the tournament.

In the win over the Tigers (3-1), freshman Kristen Qualls got things going early with her third home run of the season, a three-run shot, in the first inning.

In a four-run third inning, junior Tylan Buckley singled home a run, while freshman Shelby Miller drove in a run with a double to extend the lead to 7-0.

Buckley would put the game away in the fourth inning with an RBI double and give the Lady Choctaws an opportunity for the run-rule victory.

Senior Carlie Sargent needed just the one run as she pitched her fifth career shutout, allowing just three hits in 5.0 innings.

The opener against Harding, MC fell behind 1-0 early, but junior Megan Everett and senior Lauren Mulligan each drove in runs in the fourth to give the Lady Choctaws a 3-1 advantage.

The Bisons scored a run in the fourth and took the lead with two runs in the fifth, going ahead, 4-3.

The Lady Choctaws would take advantage of an error in the sixth inning to tie the game as Miller reached on an error, scoring pinch-runner Makenzie Nieto.

In the bottom of the sixth, Harding loaded the bases with two outs and Kimmy Hendricks drove in all three runs with a triple to give the Bisons a 7-4 advantage.

The Lady Choctaws would not go away quietly, however, as Qualls hit her first home run of the day to lead off the seventh.

Buckley would follow up the long ball with a triple, putting the game-tying run at the plate with no outs. Mulligan singled home Buckley with one out, but the game-tying run was stranded on base.

Buckley was MC's leading hitter on the weekend, going 6-of-9 (.667) at the plate with six runs scored, three RBI, a double, a triple and a home run. Qualls went 6-of-13 (.462) with three home runs, a double and a team-high six RBI.

The Lady Choctaws will back in action on Thursday for their first home games of the season, hosting William Carey for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
