Lady Choctaws to Hit the Road for GSC Semifinals

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team will have a chance to compete for a Gulf South Conference title when they begin play in the GSC Postseason Tournament semifinals on Friday in Pensacola, Fla.

The Lady Choctaws (13-4-1, 9-2-1 GSC) finished up their first full season of competition in the GSC with a record against conference opponents that was good enough to land them the number three seed in the postseason tournament.

MC heads into the semifinals riding a four match winning streak.  The Lady Choctaws last contest saw them edge past West Georgia 2-1 in overtime in round one of tournament action on Tuesday. The win marked the first GSC Postseason tournament win in the program's history.  MC held their ground at number eight in this week's NCAA South Regional Rankings.

The Lady Choctaws head into Friday's tournament having scored 39 goals in 18 games, for an average of 2.17 goals per match. MC leads the conference in both total shots on goal (149) and shots on goal per game (8.28). They are led offensively by Lauren Smith and Caitlin Hayes, who have combined for 14 goals, including seven game-winners between the two.

West Florida (14-2-1, 11-1 GSC) locked up the number one overall seed, and hosting rights to the Conference semifinals. The Argonauts bring the highest scoring offense into the tournament, leading the conference in both goals scored (50) and goals per contest (2.78).  The Argos ranked number six in the latest NCAA South Regional Rankings.

The Flames of Lee University (14-2-1, 11-1 GSC) come into the tournament as the number two seed. The Flames lead conference goals against average (0.47), save percentage (0.879) and shutouts (7). Lee checked in at number four in the latest NCAA South Region Rankings.

The University of West Alabama (11-6-1, 8-3-1 GSC) round out the field of four as the number four seed. The Tigers have taken 134 shots in the season, ranking them third in the conference. West Alabama knocked off Union University 1-0 in round one of the tournament on Tuesday.

Game one will be between West Florida and West Alabama at 5:00 p.m. at the UWF Soccer Complex. Game two between MC and Lee will be immediately following the first game. The winner of each game will face off against each other on Sunday in the championship match at 1:00 p.m.
