CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team will wrap up regular season play this weekend with a two-game slate. The Choctaws will travel to Arkadelphia, Ark. to take on Ouachita Baptist University on Friday, and play host to Harding University on Sunday.
MC (9-2-2, 7-1-1 GSC) heads into the final weekend of the regular season having already clinched the GSC regular season title. The Choctaw's 0-0 draw against Shorter on Oct.23 gave them the required amount of points in GSC play to officially lock up the regular season crown. By clinching the regular season title, the Choctaws will now serve as host for the GSC Men's Soccer Postseason Tournament on Nov. 4 and 6.
The Choctaws were able to hold down their spot of number four in the latest NCAA South Region Rankings, having broken in at the same spot in last week's initial rankings.
Through 13 games, MC has recorded 34 goals scored for an average of 2.62 per contest. That average for the Choctaws leads all teams in the GSC, and ranks 14
th in the NCAA.
Jorge Delgado leads all Choctaws with nine goals and 19 points in the 2016 campaign.
Jacob Farthing has posted six goals, including a GSC-best four game-winning goals.
In the assist stat column, four different Choctaws claim a stake in the team lead. Farthing,
Horacio Gutierrez Jr.,
Dinho Zwane and
George Fradenburg have all notched four assists on the season.
In goal,
Humberto Pelaez brings a record of 8-2-2 into play this weekend. The junior goalie has posted a GSC-best six shutouts this season, and currently ranks second in the conference in goals against average (0.88), save percentage (0.83) and total saves (54). Pelaez was most recently the recipient of his conference-leading fifth GSC Defender of the Week Award this past Tuesday, having also taken home the award on 9/6, 9/20, 10/4 and 10/18.
The Choctaws bring an all-time record of 3-0 into play against Ouachita Baptist, while their meeting with Harding on Sunday will be for the first time in program history.
Sunday's match against Harding will serve as the last regular season home game for the senior class at MC. The group, consisting of 12 players, will be honored approximately 10 minutes prior to kickoff at 2:00 p.m.
