ROME, Ga. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team knocked off the Hawks of Shorter University 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The win for MC brings their record to 10-4-1 overall and 7-2-1 in Gulf South Conference play.
"This was a win that we needed going forward," Head Coach
Darryl Longabaugh said. "Hopefully we will be able to keeps things rolling into next week and try to create even more momentum for our team down the stretch"
Caitlin Hayes provide the game's lone goal. The junior defender found the back of the net with a header in the 48
th minute for her 5
th score of the year, a mark good enough for second on the team. The goal also served as Hayes's fourth game-winning goal of 2016, a statistic that ranks her first in the GSC.
Lauren Kate Carter helped set up the score for her team-leading 8
th assist of the season.
The Lady Choctaws outshot the Hawks 17-3 in the contest, and took nine shots on goal to Shorter's two. MC evenly distributed their shot total, as they took nine shots in the first half, and eight in the second.
Meghan Mauzy took a team-high five shots on the afternoon, with one on frame.
Emma Claire Furman and
Lauren Smith both tallied three shots, with Furman accounting for three shots on goal and Smith recording one.
Kyra Montes contributed for two shots on goal, while Hayes and
Gaylynn Cooper each registered a shot on goal. Carter and
Katie Taylor both took a shot in the contest as well.
In Goal,
Gabby Kayser recorded her first career shutout as a Lady Choctaw, going a perfect 2-2 on save opportunities. The freshman goalkeeper improved her record to 2-0 on the year.
The Lady Choctaws took six corner kicks in the contest, while holding the Hawks to two. MC committed three offside infractions, compared to Shorter's two. The navy and gold was whistled for 10 fouls in the match, while Shorter was tagged for eight.
The Lady Choctaws will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 27 when they host West Florida in a GSC matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
