Women’s Soccer Preview: North Alabama

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team will travel to Florence, Ala. this weekend to take on the University of North Alabama on Sunday in a Gulf South Conference contest.

The Lady Choctaws bring an overall record of 9-2-1 into Sunday's match, which finds them ranked 7th in the latest NSCAA South Region Poll. MC's conference record of 6-0-1 finds them currently in second place in the GSC.

Last weekend saw the Lady Choctaws pick up two more conference victories, improving their current win streak against GSC opponents to five straight. MC knocked off Valdosta State 3-0 on Friday, Oct. 7, and West Georgia 2-0 on Sunday, Oct. 9.

As a team, the navy and gold have scored 26 goals through 12 games, good enough for an average of 2.17 per game. The Lady Choctaws have taken 198 shots for an average of just over 16 shots per game, a mark that ranks second in the conference. MC's 100 shots on goal for the year leads all teams in the GSC.

The Lady Choctaws are led offensively by sophomore forward Lauren Smith, who leads the team with five goals scored on the season. Smith gained sole possession of the team lead in goals with her second two-goal performance of the season against West Georgia last Sunday.

Sophomore defender Caitlin Hayes sits second on the team with four goals scored on the year. Hayes's three game-winning goals tie her for the lead among GSC players.

The Lady Choctaws have totaled 24 assists so far in 2016, a number that puts them at an average of two per match. Both of those stats for MC rank first in the GSC.

Freshman midfielder Lauren Kate Carter leads all Lady Choctaws, and is tied for the lead in the GSC, with seven assists on the season.  Carter has helped set up a score for MC in each of her last four matches.  Freshman forward Kyra Montes's four assists find her in second place amongst the Lady Choctaws.

In Goal, Andrea McDonald has converted 28 saves on 37 opportunities, for a save percentage of just over 75 percent. The sophomore netminder has compiled a record of 8-2-1 on the season, while her four shutouts rank second in the conference. McDonald has seen her goals against average plummet to 0.83 as a result of the past four matches, having not allowed a goal in her last 363 minutes between the posts.

The Lady Choctaws look to pickup their first program win over the Lions on Sunday, as they bring an all-time record of 0-2 versus UNA into the matchup. Last season's meeting saw MC drop a 2-1 decision at home.

Match time for Sunday is slated for 1:00 p.m. Live stats and streaming video for the game will be available through UNA's athletic website.
