CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team will travel to Cleveland, Miss. today to play their first Gulf South Conference Match of the season against Delta State at 3:00 p.m.
Last season, the Lady Choctaws (1-0) picked up their first-ever Gulf South Conference win over Delta State, 2-1. In this game, senior
Sayit Mejia Bello (Bogota, Columbia) scored the first goal followed by a finish from
Melanie Benner (Seminole, Fla.) giving MC a 2-0 lead. The Lady Statesmen attempted to come back in the 70th minute of play as Tabitha Hayden found the back of the net bringing the final score to 2-1.
The Lady Choctaws started off their 2015 season with a big 7-0 win over Belhaven. Five different Lady Choctaws scored in this match including freshman Jess Davenport (Widness, England) and Lauren Smith (Birmingham, Ala.) who posted two goals each. The MC offense is also led by Mejia Bello who had one finish and two helpers in the Belhaven game.The Lady Choctaw defense is led by senior
Meghan Dodge (Palm Harbor, Fla) and junior
Madison Leonard (Cantonment, Fla.), allowing just five shots by Belhaven.
Andrea McDonald is in goal for the Lady Choctaws, posting one save and allowing no goals so far this season.
The Lady Statesmen (1-0) will also be playing their first GSC match of the season against the Lady Choctaws. They won their first match of the year with a 1-0 win over Montevallo.
Leading the Delta State attack is Taylor Guess who has tallied one goal this season. The Lady Statesment also return three of its leading goal scorers from the 2014 season including Tais Cotta, Laky Cryder and Tabitha Hayden.
In goal for the Lady Statesmen is Taylor Taffo who made ten saves in the game against Montevallo.
The Lady Choctaws have faced Delta State for three consecutive seasons and have picked up close wins each year over the Lady Statesmen.
