MOBILE, Ala. --- The Mississippi College women's tennis team opened the National Christian College Athletic Association Tournament with sweeps against Roberts Wesleyan College and Campbellsville University.
The Lady Choctaws (11-8) began the day with a 7-0 win over RWC (11-11), dropping just three total games to take a 3-0 lead after doubles. The freshman team of
Karly Matthews Karly Reid swept the #3 doubles, 8-0.
In singles action, sophomore
Courtney Schrock picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Camilla Linhart at #5. Freshman
Sofia Gonzalez-Carrera won at #1 (6-0, 6-4), while sophomore
Christa Owen won the #4 match (6-4, 6-1).
Freshman
Brenna Keller wrapped up the sweep with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Natalia Cardona at #3. The singles matches for Matthews and Reid went unfinished with the outcome already decided.
The Lady Choctaws would clinch a spot in the semifinals of the tournament with a 5-0 win over CU (11-9). MC would get three more wins in doubles play with Keller and Schrock having the biggest win at #2, 8-4.
MC needed just two singles wins to clinch a spot in the next round, and Keller (6-0, 6-3) and Matthews (6-0, 6-0) would close out the match. The other four matches went unfinished.
The Lady Choctaws have one more pool play match on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. when they will face Dallas Baptist. Both teams have qualified for the semifinals with the winner of the match earning the #1 seed in the pool.
