Lady Choctaws Wrap Up 2015 Season at NCCAA World Series

TROUTVILLE, Va. --- The Mississippi College softball team finished up the 2015 season in the National Christian College Athletic Association World Series, played at the Botetourt Sports Complex.

The Lady Choctaws (30-24) became just the fourth team in school history to reach the 30-win mark, three of which have come in the last five seasons.

After winning twice on Wednesday to stay in the winner's bracket, MC would drop their first game of the day to Oklahoma Christian 5-0. They would bounce back to take down Cedarville 3-1 before being eliminated from the tournament with a 3-2 loss to Lee University.

In the opener, MC could not get any offense going as Shea Coats tossed a complete game shutout for OCU, striking out seven with just one walk. They would get all the runs they needed in the first inning on a 2-run single by Haley Squier.

In the win over Cedarville, senior Lacie Patterson was the story, allowing just six hits and one earned run over 7.0 innings. Patterson was named to the All-Tournament Team and retired 14 straight batters at one point.

In the second inning, sophomore Megan Everett drove in the game-winning runs with a double to score juniors Madison Oliver and Kimmie Conley. Everett went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI.

Junior Ashley Subervielle doubled home senior Karla Beth Hux for an insurance run in the third inning.

With the win over Cedarville, it would be the second time in less than a week that MC would be forced to play three games in one day. They would have to play Lee for the sixth time on the season in an elimination contest.

The Lady Flames took a lead in the second inning with three runs, the big blow coming on a two-run single from Lexie Dean.

MC would get a comeback going in the fourth inning when senior Karla Beth Hux drew a 10-pitch walk and came all the way home to score on double by junior Madison Oliver to the right-center field gap.

Oliver would come home to score on an error by the Lady Flames and MC had a runner on first with no outs. Lee was able to get out of the jam without any further damage and a 3-2 lead.

In the fifth inning, senior Shay Mickens led off with a single and stole second base, tying the MC all-time record for steals with the 84th of her career. She tied Jennifier Jones (2008-11) for the record.

Mickens would move up to third on a passed ball, but a lined shot by Hux that appeared to drive in the game-tying run would turn into a double play and end the threat.

Junior Carlie Sargent came out of the bullpen and allowed just one hit over 4.1 innings with four strikeouts.

The Lady Choctaws finished fourth in the NCCAA Tournament with the effort.

The NCCAA World Series was the final games for seniors Hux, Mickens, Patterson, Tori Bankston, Bethany Fletcher, Elissa Kelly, Macey Lee, Kaitlin Moak, Brooke Smitherman and Ashley Vann.
